Graphic Promoting Heat Safety
Heat Safety

Beat the heat this summer! Read up on heat emergencies and how you can protect yourself and your family against the extreme temperatures this season.

*Heat Cramps*: These typically affect people who sweat a lot during strenuous activity. This sweating depletes the body's salt & moisture levels. Symptoms include muscle cramps, pain, or spasms in the abdomen, arms, or legs. If you are experiencing these, drink water and eat a snack heavy in carbohydrates. Get medical help if cramps do not subside after 1 hour.

*Heat Exhaustion*: This is the body's response to an excessive loss of water & salt. It is most likely to affect the elderly, people with high blood pressure, and those working in a hot environment. Symptoms include headache, nausea, weakness, heavy sweating, elevated body temperature, or decreased urine output. If you feel these symptoms then drink small SIPS of water, move to a cool area, and place a cool compress on the neck, head, and underarms.

Remove layers of clothing if needed. *Call 9-1-1 if symptoms worsen or last over 1 hour.*

*Heat Stroke*: This is the most serious heat-related illness. The body can no longer sweat or control its temperature. Heat stroke can cause permanent disability or death if the person does not receive emergency treatment. Symptoms include confusion, slurred speech, loss of consciousness, hot & dry skin, seizures, or very high body temperature. *If you notice someone exhibiting these symptoms, call 9-1-1 immediately and move the person to a cooler place.* It is critical that you DO NOT give the person anything to drink. Finally, place a cool compress on the neck, head, and underarms.

*Preventing illness*:

* Drink plenty of water and fluids high in electrolytes.
* Take breaks in shaded areas or indoors.
* Apply sunscreen as needed.
* Wear lightweight and loose clothing.
* Stay updated on extreme weather alerts and additional safety tips.
