Friend,
On April 4, 1949, representatives from 12 countries in Europe and North America signed the North Atlantic Treaty to create NATO -- a collective security system of independent member states to defend each other from attack by third parties.
NATO proved to be an extremely successful alliance and a check on the threat posed by the Soviet Union during the Cold War.
Today, I believe that NATO is as important as it has ever been.
As President Biden said during his speech in Vilnius last week, when Vladimir Putin unleashed his brutal war on Ukraine, he was betting NATO would break apart and that democratic leaders would be weak -- but he thought wrong.
That’s why I joined Florida Senator Marco Rubio in introducing legislation to protect and defend NATO -- by preventing any U.S. President from leaving the alliance without Senate approval.
And on Wednesday, the Senate passed my bipartisan bill, sending a message that America is strong on its own but even stronger with our allies.
If you agree that America is strongest when it stands with our friends against tyranny and dictatorships, I hope you’ll add your name to support this important legislation.
