NRSC-picked Republican to challenge Tim Kaine in “must-win” race for Democrats
Friend, I have a new opponent.
Yesterday, a far-right, NRSC-picked Republican announced his campaign to challenge me for Virginia’s U.S. Senate seat.
Minutes after the announcement, the Associated Press called it a “must-win race for Democrats facing a tough Senate map in 2024.”
This MAGA candidate has defended those who invaded the Capitol on January 6, called President Biden a “dictator”, compared abortion to the Holocaust, and pledged to repeal the Affordable Care Act and phase out Medicaid and Social Security.
The AP article also acknowledged Virginia’s recent shift to the right in electing a “slate of Republican statewide officials” in 2021.
Here’s the bottom line: Virginians deserve a leader who will create good-paying jobs, lower costs and boost our economy, and stand up for our values on issues like reproductive freedom and the fundamental right to vote.
But with the NRSC chomping at the bit to flip my seat -- and the U.S. Senate -- to GOP control, we have a real fight ahead of us. I can’t win this race without your support.

Former GOP Congressional candidate Hung Cao has launched his campaign to officially challenge Tim Kaine for Virginia’s U.S. Senate seat.
Cao, who was openly recruited by the GOP’s national Senate fundraising committee, is an anti-choice extremist who said he was “thrilled” that Roe v. Wade was overturned and compared abortion to the Holocaust.
He has also supported Florida Sen. Rick Scott’s plan to put Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security on the chopping block, called for gutting health care protections for 1.3 million Virginians with pre-existing conditions, and expressed sympathy for the January 6th insurrectionists while calling into question the 2020 election results.
Put simply, Hung Cao does not represent the interests of the people of Virginia -- and he cannot be allowed anywhere near the U.S. Senate.
Here’s the problem: Steve Daines, chair of the well-funded National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC), has recruited Cao to run against Tim next November. And if he can access the funds, he could have a real shot at winning -- thanks to his national connections.

Virginia deserves so much better than the extreme, right-wing candidates the NRSC is recruiting to run for Senate.
