Good News and Bad News Legislative Update

Good News - AB 309 (Social Housing) Amended -

This bill was amended in a major way before passing.

The amendments reflect everything we asked for in our position letters. The bill was changed from a huge, sweeping program into a pilot program. The pilot will include only 3 projects, and those will be done on state land. The pilot will not include a new independent bureaucracy, but will be created as a program under the Department of General Services. You can see all the amendments here.

Bad News - SB 423 was passed with a few amendments, but still includes the coastal zone and doesn't reflect the amendments requested by equity organizations to better align it with the Affirmative Fair Housing requirements. Those organizations are expecting to get a meeting with Scott Wiener to discuss further amendments. The hearing in the Assembly Natural Resources Committee was very unusual, a bit heated and lasted almost 2 hours. You can watch that hearing here. We will soon request your action to oppose SB 423 in assembly appropriations.

Bad News - we need funds to cover a one-time $1400 bill.

Update -Today is the last day for policy committees to meet and report bills. You can see the status of all bills we are following here. You can see all of our 2023 position letters here.

It is also the last day before the month-long legislative summer recess. This is a good time to get meetings in your district with your legislators.

We are trying to schedule a speaker from the Coastal Commission for our next teleconference. We will lt you know when the date is finalized.
