Dear John,

This morning you'll wake up to watch Channel 5's report that polls show Alice Rolli surged 9 points since the last independent poll - putting her in the top 3 for the race for Nashville's next mayor. 

I'm writing today to tell you about why we need to support Alice, today.

Thirty years ago I was the basketball coach at Hume Fogg High School. Alice walked onto the court said she wanted to help the team as our manager.

One day in scrimmage, we were a player short and I asked if she'd step in. She was as good as the rest of the girls - and I asked if she'd like to be on the team. But she saw her role for our team to manage and support others. To serve others. 

She took classes on how to tape ankles, she cleaned water bottles, she put out cones. She spent her time worrying more about her teammates than herself. She operates with an intensity and a purpose that I've rarely seen in my decades teaching and coaching. 

A few weeks ago I contributed to her campaign for Mayor of Nashville. She called me to thank me. 

And I told her, she's the one. She's the one we need, right now, to serve Nashville. 

We need to get the city on the right track - and Alice has the heart to serve. 

I know it. I've seen it.
