Safe Kennel Saves Lives Celebrating 14 years of providing safehousing to survivors and their pets In May 2009, Doorways became one of nine domestic violence shelters in the United States, and the first in Virginia, to provide emergency shelter for pets along with their people. Providing safehousing to survivors and their pets eliminated a significant barrier to safety for many animal lovers: the choice between escaping violence and leaving their beloved pet behind. We believe survivors should never have to make that choice. Our Safe Kennel offers pets year-round climate control (heat and air conditioning), indoor and outdoor areas, and most importantly, a safe escape along with their family. Explore the link between pets and intimate partner violence "Abusive people threaten a pet in order to prevent family members from leaving or from disclosing violence to others." "As many as 8 out of 10 women entering domestic violence shelters say their abuser threatened, harmed, or killed a family pet." Learn More "More than a quarter of domestic violence victims stay in abusive relationships for a median time of two years to avoid leaving their pets behind. And a staggering percentage of domestic violence victims report returning to an abusive partner out of concern for their pets' safety." Learn More "Safe havens are sheltering services available in an area that assist individuals experiencing domestic violence with placing their companion animals out of harm's way so that they may seek safety for themselves." Learn More "97% of domestic violence survivors report that keeping their pets is an important factor in deciding to seek shelter, according to the 'PALS Report and Survey: Breaking Barriers to Safety and Healing.'"
