Look, Republicans in the impeachment trial have just about tried everything to distract Americans from the charges against Trump and block new witnesses from testifying.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Mitch McConnell was forced to admit to his caucus that he didn't have the votes to block Democrats from calling witnesses.

Mitch McConnell is used to using his power in the Senate to block anything he pleases. He stopped President Obama's Supreme Court nomination, Merrick Garland, from even having a single hearing. He has sat on over 250 pieces of progressive legislation, including legislation mandating background checks supported by 90% of Americans. He'll do anything to protect his grasp on power.
