We are thrilled to announce our second candidate of 2023: Lashrecse Aird for Virginia State Senate District 13! We must protect the Virginia Senate from falling into Republican hands this year, and this seat is absolutely critical in doing so.

MEET LASHRECSE AIRD

Lashrecse Aird is running in the newly drawn 13th District in the Virginia State Senate.  Lashrecse served three terms in the VA House of Delegates and was the leader in passing Breonna’s Law in Virginia which banned the use of no-knock warrants.  In the Democratic primary, Aird defeated an anti-choice Democrat and will be a staunch advocate to protect reproductive freedom in Virginia.   As a member of the VA Senate, Aird will use her experience from the House to fight for all Virginians to advance progressive policies.

WHY VIRGINIA IS IMPORTANT

In 2023, we have a unique opportunity in Virginia to flip the House and expand the Senate Democratic majority in one election cycle. In 2021, Democrats lost the majority in the House by a total vote difference of 733 votes in the three closest districts. The entire State Senate is up for election for four-year terms.  It is crucial to hold the Senate that will serve through 2027.

The new state legislative maps are fair and provide Democrats with key opportunities in open seats and new districts. With recent Democratic wins in special Congressional and state senate elections, we have the momentum to compete in key swing districts that will decide the majority in the House and put us in the position to expand the Senate.

Historic Firsts Series

Sister District has partnered with Teen Vogue on the Historic Firsts series. This month we feature Tarra Simmons, the first, formerly-incarcerated person to win a state election in Washington State.

Who is Sister District DC/VA/MD?

We are volunteers who agree that elections for state legislatures are where the real change is made, and understand the impact small efforts and donations can make in these critical elections.

Our Steering Committee coordinates our efforts across the DC/VA/MD area. One of our key Committee members is our Treasurer, Jennie Pilkington.

About Jennie

Jennie grew up in Cape Town during the apartheid era, and moved to Washington, DC shortly before Reagan was elected. She worked as a pension actuary in a benefits consulting firm for over 30 years while raising two wonderful children, neither of whom is actuarially inclined (Jennie's words, not ours!), and fostering and/or adopting a series of comically goofy retired racing greyhounds. The nose of her current greyhound makes an occasional appearance during Zoom meetings and phonebanks.

Jennie has volunteered with our chapter since May 2017. Canvassing for our 2017 candidates and connecting with Virginia voters that year convinced her that supporting progressive candidates in State legislative elections was the best way for her to help protect the rights of minorities and effect positive change.

Before You Go...

Sister District’s mission is to imagine, build, and expand progressive power in state legislatures, and we know that organizing around elections is just one piece of the puzzle.

That’s why we’re amplifying the voices of local lawmakers, educating the public about the importance of state leaders and policies, and inspiring people to deepen their civic engagement — especially locally and down-ballot.

There is power in storytelling, and the more people we bring into this fight, the more powerful our movement will become. We hope you will join us in our efforts!
