Happy Fourth of July!

The Fourth of July is a time of pride as we commemorate the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. On this momentous day, our forefathers boldly declared their desire for liberty, equality and self-governance. They envisioned a nation where all individuals could pursue life, liberty and happiness, free from tyranny and oppression.

The Fourth of July holds a special place in the hearts of many Iowans and Americans. It is a time when we gather with family, friends and neighbors to celebrate the freedoms we hold dear. This day serves as a reminder of the bravery, resilience, and determination that brought about the United States of America.

It is our duty to ensure that the principles upon which our country was founded remain alive and relevant. Further, the Fourth of July serves as a reminder that these principles should not betaken for granted but rather embraced and safeguarded for future generations.

On this day it is also essential that we take a moment to reflect on, and honor, the brave men and women who have selflessly served in our armed forces. Our armed forces have always played a vital role in safeguarding the principles of freedom that our Founding Fathers envisioned.

Generation after generation, brave soldiers have answered the call of duty, leaving behind their families, comfort, and sometimes even their lives to protect our nation and its values. Their unwavering commitment to our country deserves our utmost admiration and respect.

This day also prompts us to consider the challenges that lie ahead. It calls upon us to renew our dedication to the values of liberty, justice and equality. It encourages us to work together to address the issues that divide us and continue to strive for a more perfect union.

I welcome the people of Iowa’s 1st district to join me celebrating this great holiday. Beyond enjoying our state’s bountiful outdoor spaces, the smell of food on the grill or watching extraordinary firework displays, I hope we can all reflect on the blessings that this great nation has provided to all its people. With a grateful heart, I wish you all a safe and happy Fourth of July!

Sincerely,
Dr. Mariannette Miller-Meeks
