Happy 247th Birthday, America! Fun fact: on July 4 in 1778 and 1781, George Washington issued double rations of rum to his troops to mark the important date – so have a great time at your barbeque and celebration with friends and family. (But please remember that double rations of rum and fireworks don’t mix, so celebrate responsibly.)

The Fourth of July is a great day to talk to your kids about democracy. In the last few years, I've talked to mine about some things that are particularly important right now: remembering that democracy is a duty for all Americans and freedom only for some is not freedom at all. When my kids were little we used to read a book called The Big Box by Toni & Slade Morrison – there is a refrain that has stayed with me ever since, “...if freedom is handled just your way, it is not my freedom or free.”

We have always been working to form a more perfect union and we still aren’t finished. There will be setbacks and tough times, but we cannot lose sight of the goal.

Today I will be out at parades and BBQs, listening to the Hamilton soundtrack & Mixtape and thinking about our shared history, present, and future and how to ensure we never stop working for true liberty & justice for all, even in times when some seem determined to give up on it. This is work we must do together, as patriots who believe in the enduring promise of this nation.

Have a safe and healthy 4th!

Liz
