Join the High Fivers Club!

"What's the High Fivers Club", you ask? It started with a simple idea: There are nearly 1.2 million registered Democrats in Colorado -- what if every single one of them gave just $5 a month to the Colorado Democratic Party (CDP)?

Answer: The CDP would be the best-funded state party in the country -- with zero dollars from corporate PACs and plenty for flipping red seats to blue!

If you haven't given to the CDP yet, here's a few simple reasons why we're asking you today:

  • The CDP is the central base that supports volunteer recruitment, training candidates, and helping county parties win elections. While the DNC provides some limited funds, the reality is it is up to us to raise our own money so we can support Democratic candidates running for office in Colorado.
  • The CDP is neutral in primaries -- but once the Democratic nominee has emerged, we connect our vast network of volunteers to them so they can knock on more doors than the Republicans.
  • Elections and candidates come and go, but the CDP remains. We provide continuity so candidates don't have to reinvent the wheel every cycle.

GOP Sore Loser Politics
End Sham Recalls against Polis, Lee, Pettersen

A story on Colorado Public Radio this week on the recalls looked into how the recalls have not only divided the Republican Party, but has energized Democrats in an off year.

“This is frankly more energy and activism than we would normally see in an odd [election] year,” said Democratic State Party Chair Morgan Carroll. “And it's also brought in some new people who haven't been involved before, but frankly are so disgusted at just a transparent abuse of process that they're like, I'm getting involved.”

Carroll said recall organizers aren’t running sophisticated operations, yet Democrats have not taken the threat lightly. In 2013, two Democratic state senators were successfully ousted from office. As it stands now, the party only has a slim advantage in the Senate.

“We are not underestimating these because they only need to flip two seats to flip the majority and overthrow basically most of the results of the 2018 election,” she noted.

We can't let the GOP undermine democracy with these frivolous sham recalls. Visit Our Colorado Way of Life -- the issue committee that is focused on defending our Democrats -- to learn more at www.coloradoway.org. If you want to volunteer, email [email protected]!

Round 2 of the Democratic Presidential Primary Debates

Another lively set of debates between our Democratic candidates for President is in the books! On Tuesday and Wednesday, voters had the opportunity to hear from 20 of the Democrats running for President, and what their visions are for our country. As Democratic party chair Morgan Carroll put it:

Colorado Democrats, however, said the presidential contenders were right on the mark.

“Voters here in Colorado and across our country have had a chance to hear bold ideas from our Democratic candidates these past two nights, and I think they were given a glimpse of what our country could have in the White House instead of the divisive and corrupt presidency of Donald Trump,” Colorado Democratic Party Chairperson Morgan Carroll said in a statement.  “While the Democrats on stage offered thoughtful proposals on healthcare, immigration reform, economic opportunity, and combating climate change, we’ve heard nothing but fear mongering and divisive rhetoric from Republican consultants in the cheap seats.”

After both nights, we sent out an email asking our subscribers who they thought won the debates each night. Here's the results we received!

Night 1

  1. Elizabeth Warren
  2. Bernie Sanders
  3. Pete Buttigieg
  4. Marianne Williamson
  5. Amy Klobuchar
  6. Steve Bullock
  7. John Hickenlooper
  8. John Delaney
  9. Tim Ryan
  10. Beto O'Rourke

Night 2

  1. Cory Booker
  2. Joe Biden
  3. Tulsi Gabbard
  4. Kamala Harris
  5. Michael Bennet
  6. Andrew Yang
  7. Jay Inslee
  8. Julian Castro
  9. Kirsten Gillibrand
  10. Bill de Blasio

*Note: This is not an endorsement or an opinion of the Colorado Democratic Party -- these are purely informal survey results from emails we sent out after each debate. The Colorado Democratic Party is neutral in primaries and won't be endorsing any of the candidates until after the nomination.

Elections: CU Regents

The CU Board of Regents is sometimes an overlooked race.  No more.  The CU Regents are the governing Board for the entire flagship University of Colorado system and their decisions impact:

  • Tuition Prices
  • Diversity of Students & Faculty
  • Academic Freedom
  • Promotion or Hindrance of Research (Stem Cell, Cancer etc.)
  • Who is hired as the President of the CU sytem, under what terms and for how long.
  • Weapons policy on campus
  • Sexual assault prevention & response on campus
  • Regional & State Economic Development

Even if you aren’t a college student or a parent or grand-parent of someone who is, the decisions made by the CU Regents impacts ALL of us.  You may recently remember the hiring decision of form Republican Congressman Mark Kennedy by the Board as the new President despite concerns around affirmative action, women’s choice, racial inclusion and LGBTQ equality on campus.

Republicans currently hold a majority on the CU Board of Regents by ONE seat.  We have the opportunity to FLIP the majority of the CU Board of Regents in 2020.

MEET ILANA SPIEGEL – CANDIDATE FOR 6TH CD BOARD OF REGENTS

"I am running Board of Regents for the 6th Congressional District because Coloradans deserve a CU Board of Regents that will put students and families first. We can do that by flipping this seat (CD-6) and electing a Democratic Majority.

CD 6 of the CU Board of Regents is currently held by a Republican who sided with his party in a 5-4 vote to place a hardline ultra conservative, anti-lgbtq President for the University of Colorado. This seat, right here in CD 6 is the seat we can flip to gain a Democratic majority on the CU Regents Board and hire staff and personnel that are qualified, and also reflect the values of our state.

Being a mom of children with disabilities helped spur my commitment to fight for an inclusive and innovative public education for ALL our students. As a teacher, I know the power of public education and the strength and opportunity it brings to our state and communities.

We can make the University of Colorado a flagship university -- an example for the nation of how a university should be run and what an inclusive student body looks like, but that’s going to require your help. I hope you’ll join other Democatic elected officials and party members who are supporting our campaign by going to www.ilana4regent.com to make a contribution or volunteer and help us flip the CU Board of Regents."

Together,

Ilana

New Laws Going Into Effect Today

Your Democratic majorites in the Colorado General Assembly got a lot done this year. By working with the community, they passed bills that gained a lot of support -- including bipartisan support -- and that will continue to move our statement forward. Here's some of the major bills that are going into effect today:

Expanding Opportunity & Building a Fair Economy

  • HB19-1013: This will help families with the high cost of child care.
  • HB19-1280: This will help kick-start college savings for every baby born or adopted in Colorado, helping address the burden of higher education costs on students and their families.
  • SB19-002: This will increase protections for student loan borrowers by establishing licensing requirements for loan service providers and increasing enforcement of complaints.

Saving You and Your Family Money on Healthcare

  • HB19-1001: This will require increased cost transparency by hospitals.
  • HB19-1216: This will cap co-pays for life-saving insulin to $100/month.
  • SB19-005: This will allow for the importation of lower-cost prescription drugs from Canada.
  • HB19-1010: This will implement protections for consumers when accessing freestanding emergency departments.
  • HB19-1211: This will streamline access to care.
  • HB19-1131: This will increase transparency of prescription costs for both prescribers and patients.

Expanding LGBTQ Equality

  • HB19-1129: This will ban state-licensed mental health professionals from practicing the harmful, discredited practice of conversion therapy on minors in Colorado.
Increasing Access to Jobs & Workforce Training
  • HB19-1008: The SHOP Act will help Colorado schools build or renovate career & technical education facilities, expanding opportunities for students to explore skills training and a range of career options.
  • SB19-171: This will help students and adults pursuing careers in the trades access opportunity by building a directory of apprenticeship programs and coordinating with local workforce centers, businesses, and education institutions.
Protecting Colorado’s Environment & Promoting Clean Energy
  • HB 19-1113: This will prevent pollution of precious water resources from future hardrock mining operations.
  • HB19-127: This will protect water sources and firefighters from dangerous PFAS chemicals in firefighting foam.
  • HB19-1003: This will increase access to renewable energy for Coloradans by expanding and streamlining the community solar gardens program.

Increasing Affordable Housing and Renters’ Rights

  • HB19-1245: This will boost investment in affordable housing.
  • HB19-1322: This will provide much-needed relief in areas across the state.
  • HB19-1170: This will improve a renter’s rights if their home becomes uninhabitable or unfit for human habitation.
  • HB19-1106: This will put reasonable limitations on the application fees landlords can charge prospective tenants.

Pursuing Criminal Justice Reform

  • HB19-1275: This will expand access to record sealing to help more people successfully obtain and maintain housing and employment and move on from their past mistakes after they have served their sentences.
  • HB19-1025: The “Ban the Box” bill gives former offenders a chance to demonstrate their qualifications for a job based on their merit and skill during an interview, rather than being immediately passed over because they checked “the box” indicating criminal history on an initial application form.
  • SB19-231: This creates a scholarship program for former youth offenders who are pursuing a higher education, lowering the chance of recidivism and helping them become productive members of society.
Standing Up for Rural Colorado
  • SB19-107: This will continue the legislature’s efforts to expand the deployment of broadband infrastructure across the state and close the digital divide.
Supporting Open & Transparent Government and Fair Campaigns
  • SB19-068: This will require expanded disclosure of funding behind campaign communications.
  • HB19-1318: This increases required transparency of political spending.
  • HB19-1007: This establishes contribution limits for county candidates to better ensure a level playing field.
Updating Election Laws to Expand Access to the Ballot
  • HB19-1278: This reduces wait times at voting centers.
  • SB19-235: This expands automatic voter registration.
  • SB19-202: This improves access for voters with disabilities.

Rural Spotlight from Shelia: San Miguel County

San Miguel County is located in the Southwest corner of Colorado. To the north of San Miguel County is Montrose County, to the east is Ouray and San Juan Counties, to the south is Dolores County and the State of Utah to the west. Telluride is the county seat of San Miguel County.

Established in 1883 and name after the San Miguel river which runs through San Miguel. In 1875, the Smuggler gold vein was discovered near Telluride. The Smuggler-Union, Tomboy, and Liberty Bell mines combined produced over a hundred tons of gold by 1920, third in the state of Colorado

Eleni Constantine and Dan Chancellor lead the way with the San Miguel Democrats working to keep San Miguel a beautiful shade of Blue, up and down the ticket.  There are approximately 2,293 registered Democrats, 907 Republicans and 2,106 Unaffiliated voters in San Miguel County. In 2018, 63.69% of the voters turned in their ballots.

With beautiful canyons and amazing nationally protected lands like Lizard Head Waterways, Mount Sneffels Wilderness, Old Spanish National Historic Trail, Telluride National Historic District and the Uncompahgre National Forest, San Miguel County offers an abundance of recreation opportunities, like fishing, hiking, camping, river rafting, mountain biking and skiing.
