John –

The Supreme Court has ruled against affirmative action in college admissions, gutting equitable access to higher education – and the economic opportunity that comes with it.

For decades, affirmative action gave Black students and other students of color a seat at the table. It opened doors for those who had been left behind, many of whom are the first in their families to attend college. It brought diverse life experiences and perspectives to our classrooms and campus communities, benefiting ALL students.

By eliminating race as one of many factors for admission of qualified students, this Court’s majority chose to roll back decades of progress and slam the door shut for too many of our nation’s most promising students. It’s shameful, and it’s wrong.

Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson’s dissent said it best: “…deeming race irrelevant in law does not make it so in life”.

This ruling is a disappointing setback, but this fight is far from over. As your voice in Congress, I won’t stop fighting for justice, equality, and opportunity for all Americans.

– Marilyn
