Dear friends,
|
At the heart of the great riot of life that is the Ecuadorian Amazon, a black plague spreads, choking the rivers, poisoning the children, silencing the birds.
Oil.
Hundreds of oil spills in the last decade, pouring from drilling sites into the crystal headwaters of the Amazon basin. More plants, insects, and animals live here than anywhere else on Earth, alongside Indigenous communities who've called it home for millennia.
They are ALL in danger.
But the Indigenous peoples here are fighting back. In one part of the forest, they've declared a huge territory to ban oil and mining, once and for all. In another, they've taken Ecuador's government to court -- and won!
Now a knife-edge referendum will decide whether oil drills invade one of the most beautiful, and fragile, parts of the rainforest.
We can help stop them. If each of us donates just a little, we can supercharge this fight for the Amazon. We'll support Indigenous leaders as they mobilise every last vote to save the forest -- all while funding visionary, Indigenous-led projects to ban oil drilling. And we'll accelerate Avaaz campaigns, from Peru to Brazil, to Colombia, facing down new threats to the forest.
Donate what you can now -- we only have 60 days until the referendum that could save the rainforest from Big Oil!

Avaaz members have made fighting for the Amazon a major priority this year. It's no surprise. The forest is facing threats wherever we look. We've already helped to stop the so-called “genocide bill”, which threatened the uncontacted Indigenous communities in Peru, supported a massive march of Indigenous people in Brazil, and brought leaders from across the Amazon together in Colombia. But now we can do even more. August is THE crucial month for the Amazon, with the referendum in Ecuador, and a global summit on the forest's future in Brazil. We could show up like never before, and fund an Indigenous uprising across the forest. If we raise enough from this email, here's what we'll do:- Supercharge the campaign to ban oil drilling in Ecuador's Yasuni National Park ahead of a national referendum, just weeks away;
- Support an inspiring, Indigenous-led project, spanning Peru and Ecuador, to help protect the Amazon's sacred headwaters from drilling and mining -- forever;
- Ensure a massive Indigenous delegation from across the Amazon travels to raise the alarm about immediate threats to the rainforest, at Brazil's upcoming Amazon Summit; and
- Power Avaaz campaigns to protect the Amazon and other critical habitats, fight fossil fuels, and stand with Indigenous communities under threat around the world.
We all know the Amazon plays a crucial role in the global ecosystem, producing vast amounts of oxygen and regulating the global climate. But the forest's own ecosystem is perilously close to collapse.Donate now to power the Amazon resistance, and let's force Big Oil’s black boots off the throat of this beautiful, living, monument to life -- once and for all!

Avaaz has spent years campaigning alongside the Indigenous peoples of the Amazon, supporting their fight on the frontlines, as well as in international climate and biodiversity negotiations. The world needs the wisdom they carry like never before. Now the battle for the Amazon -- and therefore, the whole planet -- is reaching a tipping point. Let's play our part in this great battle.
In hope, and solidarity with the people of forest,
Bert, Mike, Diego, Nell, Adela, Kaitlin, Camille, and the whole team at Avaaz
PS. This might be your first donation to our movement ever. But what a first donation! Did you know that Avaaz relies entirely on small donations from members like you? That's why we're fully independent, nimble and effective. Join the over 1 million people who've donated to make Avaaz a real force for good in the world.
