Hi John — it’s Gaby Salazar coming to you directly to talk about Pride. 🌈🏳️‍⚧ As a Queer person, Pride is supposed to be a time to celebrate our communities and the freedom to live authentically and unapologetically as we are.

But this Pride feels different.

I’ve been reflecting on the struggles and growing attacks we've seen taking place across the country against my community. I’m also thinking about all the kids who have to go to class with the fear of getting shot AND being bullied or harassed for expressing their queer identities.

In recent years, we’ve seen SO many anti-LGBTQ+ laws in my home state of Florida (I’m looking at you, Ron DeSantis) — like restricting lifesaving trans healthcare, criminalizing drag performances, and banning LGBTQ+ stories in schools. We live in a country that's rejecting medical care for trans people to “save lives'' while LGBTQ+ folx like me are gunned down every single day in schools, malls, supermarkets, and clubs.

That’s why our fight queer liberation is synonymous with our work to end gun violence in this country.

We know politicians like DeSantis and right-wing extremists are attacking the LGBTQ+ community (particularly trans kids) to distract us from REAL issues that cause us harm, like unfettered access to guns. We HAVE to call out this BS everywhere we see it.

Our generation is picking up the torch that our LGBTQ+ ancestors lit years ago. As we celebrate the LGBTQ+ community, let’s recommit ourselves to fighting against homophobia, transphobia, and gun violence everywhere.

Until then, I’ll be in the streets fighting for gun safety legislation and dancing to the bops playing at my local Pride parade.
