Hello!

The coast holds a special place in our hearts because it's where we can step back to unwind and connect with nature. Be sure to take some time this summer to enjoy our beautiful landscapes, waterways, and habitats. Together, let's revel in the wonders of our coast and work to safeguard it for generations to come. This month we reflect on the passage of the Coastal Master Plan, the start of hurricane season and highlight a recipe from our Coastal Community Cookbook

Stay cool!

Passing of the 2023 Coastal Master Plan

Louisiana showcased its unwavering commitment to climate change resilience and adaptation on May 25th, as it successfully passed the 2023 Coastal Master Plan and Annual Plan. This comprehensive blueprint, valued at $50 billion and spanning a 50-year timeline, was initially adopted in 2007 and undergoes updates every six years to incorporate the latest scientific findings and address the evolving requirements of coastal communities at risk. The passage of this plan highlights Louisiana's proactive approach to safeguarding its vulnerable coastal regions and underscores its dedication to long-term sustainability and the protection of its valuable natural resources. See coastal restoration in action! The Louisiana CPRA has more than 100 active coastal restoration projects in 2023. Here’s a breakdown:

Start of 2023 Hurricane Season

The 2023 Atlantic hurricane season has begun and is forecast to have a “near normal” number of named storms, according to NOAA, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. For reference, the 2022 season saw 14 named storms, with none making landfall in Louisiana. It's important to note that this year's projection of a "near normal" season would have been considered more active just a decade ago. As we gear up for the upcoming season, it's crucial to recognize the invaluable role played by our coastal wetlands in shielding us from hurricane winds and storm surge. Additionally, it's fantastic to see that the Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority has 33 hurricane protection projects in varying states of progress. Let's continue to advocate for coastal restoration and resilience, understanding that even a single hurricane can have a substantial impact. Together, we can make a difference.
