Hi John!

Last week, the EPP failed in their sad attempt to kill the Nature Restoration Law.

Some context: The Nature Restoration Law was proposed by the Commission as part of the European Green Deal. The law would set legally binding goals for the EU member states to protect and restore nature.

It will help to restore

  • Europe’s nature and biodiversity,
  • protect us from the impacts of droughts, floods and wildfires caused by climate change, and
  • secure our food supply in Europe.

But Manfred Weber and his conservative EPP want to kill this important initiative! In their ideological fight against it, they don’t even shy away from using misinformation and seeking questionable alliances with far-right parties.

Fortunately, the EPP wasn’t successful so far: In a meeting of the leading European Parliament committee last week, they lost their vote against the law. In an intense three-hour nail-biter, the vote on the law resulted in an equal split of 44 votes in favour and 44 against the proposal.

The EPP is missing one vote to kill the law. The committee session will be resumed next week, and until then we need your support to save the Nature Restoration Law!

Updates from the European Greens

Immigration

Another tragedy that could have been prevented!

  • Last week, a tragic shipwreck off the Greek coast claimed the lives of 650 migrants or left them scattered and missing. Our thoughts go out to the victims and their families during this devastating event.
  • We strongly condemn the inaction of both Frontex and the Greek coastguard that were aware that the ship was in distress hours before sending any help!
  • We need a better European asylum system based on the protection of human rights and solidarity: the Mediterranean needs to stop being a cemetery!

Our money is fueling Russia’s war!

Russia is waging an unlawful, genocidal war against Ukraine. Now, you can contribute to defeating Russia by naming, exposing and divesting from financial institutions that are fuelling the war.

TILT joined a coalition of environmental, youth and central-eastern organisations that want to empower citizens to check whether their money is funding the war and climate breakdown, and support them to force this activity to stop.

Nature Restoration Law

Last week our opponents failed in their sad attempt to kill the EU’s new Nature Restoration Law!

The vote was extremely tight and after a 3h session, the Parliament’s lead committee needed to postpone the final vote on the law.

It will continue on Tuesday 27 June. We won a first battle for nature and for the EU Green Deal today. But our fight continues. And we still need your support.

Please tell your friends that we need to stop destroying our nature, and that we need to save our farmers and our climate.
