The media shouldn’t be taking taxpayers’ money because reporters are supposed to be holding government accountable.

------------------------------------------------------------

Hi John,

The media shouldn’t be taking taxpayers’ money because reporters are supposed to be holding government accountable.

That’s the definition of a conflict of interest.

But it’s happening.

A lot.

Let’s start with the CBC. It takes about $1.2 billion in tax dollars every year. Your investigative journalist at the Canadian Taxpayers Federation did some digging and it turns out CBC executives took $16 million in bonuses in 2022.

Then there’s the media bailout. The federal government rolled out almost $600 million for private media outlets. That five-year bailout is set to run out next year and media outlets are already lining up for more.

This is wrong. The conflict of interest puts reporters under a cloud whether they’re good or bad. And it undermines their credibility when they’re holding government accountable.

Ask yourself something: after all of these hundreds of millions have been spent, are you seeing journalism in Canada getting better?

Click below to sign the petition calling on the government to end the media bailout and defund the CBC.

We, the undersigned, call on the federal government to defund the CBC and end its media bailout. ([link removed])

Thanks for standing up for accountability – we can make a difference together.
