John, today we celebrate Juneteenth – commemorating the end of chattel slavery in the United States.
On June 19, 1865, over two years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation, more than 250,000 enslaved people in Texas finally learned that they had gained their freedom.
Today, we celebrate the ongoing struggle for justice – because this day represents one of our nation’s most important strides towards a democracy where everyone counts.
But we must also acknowledge that that work is still incomplete, and that Black Americans continue to face inequality and discrimination everyday. Even now, we’re facing extremism in state legislatures across the country, preventing real progress on critically important voting rights, police reform, and equity legislation.
Today, we wanted to ask that you join us in celebrating Juneteenth by contributing your time or money to some of Common Cause’s local, grassroots, Black-led partners – who are leading work to protect voters, democracy, and all of our rights.
Common Cause’s state leaders have compiled this list of partners who could really benefit from your support – please find a group near you today to make a contribution >>
We believe it’s important for groups like Common Cause to spotlight the leaders who are helping to drive this monumentally important work forward. And, we urge you to make a commitment to supporting these partners beyond just today – and beyond just a financial contribution.
By volunteering our time, resources, or whatever support we can provide, we can make a powerful impact for the values we all share.
We hope you have a happy Juneteenth,
Marilyn Carpinteyro and Jordan Davis, Co-Interim Presidents
