My dad taught me that the most valuable thing you can give someone is your energy. When I was little, bummed out that my favorite meal was firmly summer fare and my birthday is solidly in the snow season, he decided he would throw me a barbeque party for my birthday. He threw on his silver and black moon-boots (they are just as cool as they sound) and his winter coat and grilled ribs in two feet of snow. He made his famous home made ice cream – which is actually a lot easier to do in that weather, and I will never forget it.

Pops, as he is now known to his grandkids, always told us to get the facts, don’t make people wait and no one on this earth starts out inherently better than any other. He impressed upon us the value of hard work and the importance of living up to your obligations and being there for your kids. And he has always been there for me. He is one of my favorite (and least favorite) debate opponents, he celebrates my epic eye rolling ability, and he sports a magnificent head of flowing white hair these days. Sadly, the moon boots were β€œmisplaced” sometime around when he started to attend the high school basketball games. A mystery that will likely never be solved.

Happy Father’s Day to Pops and all the other fathers, father figures, appreciators of dad jokes, and fans of trolling their children with awkward footwear. Thank you for the wisdom, the adventure, and most of all, the energy.
