June 2023: Fired up for fundamental freedoms [ [link removed] ]

Summer is here—and so is Pride Month, Juneteenth, Caribbean and Immigrant Heritage Month AND the one-year mark of the Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.

When I think about these important moments, I'm reminded of our past and why it's critical we never stop fighting for our future. Protecting reproductive freedom, demanding racial justice, protections for immigrants, and defending LGBTQIA+ rights must be part of the same fight. [ [link removed] ]

Pride was a protest against attacks on LGBTQIA+ lives led by trans women of color, including Marsha P. Johnson. [ [link removed] ]

Trans people like Lou Sullivan fought for decades for LGBTQIA+ rights, including full access to health care, because trans people need abortion access, too. [ [link removed]]

Abortion bans harm people of color and underrepresented communities the most, and it’s because of Black feminists like Frances M. Beal that we understand that reproductive freedom isn't just about choice—it's about equality. [ [link removed]]

If our advocacy isn't intersectional, it's not enough. We owe it to our movement and our allies to never give up and never back down. [ [link removed] ]

Honoring Juneteenth

On June 19, 1865, nearly two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was made effective, Union soldiers announced that more than 250,000 enslaved Black people in Texas were free by executive decree. The day has since been celebrated as our country’s second independence day in the African American community.

Thanks to the work of activists like Opal Lee, June 19 became a national holiday in 2021 after President Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act. [ [link removed] ]

NARAL is committed to uplifting our partners and defending all of our fundamental freedoms. We hope that you will join us in honoring Juneteenth this month and all year by supporting the work of Black-led organizations in your communities.

Our leaders must prioritize reproductive freedom for Black women and put a stop to the racial disparities in maternal health. Share your support for The Black Maternal Health Momnibus on social media. [ [link removed] ]

Our partners at SisterSong are taking reproductive justice on the road across the South this summer. Find out if they'll be in a city near you and support them however you can.

One Year Without Roe
Join us for a National Call on Thursday, June 22, to discuss the current state of abortion access as we approach one year without Roe v. Wade and learn how you can join our work by taking action in your own community.

Organizer TyJuan Thirdgill is the moment

Our organizers are a critical part of this movement, and we're so lucky to work with them. This month, we're highlighting TyJuan Thirdgill.

Proudest Win for Reproductive Freedom: "If I had to pick one that meant the most to me, it would be helping pass Proposal 3 to enshrine reproductive freedoms into the Michigan constitution."

Favorite NARAL Merch: "The NARAL playing cards! My favorite pastime is educating my friends on powerful women AND beating them in card games."

This week, TyJuan moderated 'Building Black Political Power', a virtual panel hosted by Michigan United in honor of Juneteenth. Watch the recorded event to hear more from TyJuan and other powerful speakers. [ [link removed] ]

Volunteering for reproductive freedom is a green flag [ [link removed] ]

Across the country, volunteers and organizers are coming together to take action in their own communities and beyond.

From California to Nebraska to Georgia, we know the people who are attacking reproductive freedom are the same people attacking LGBTQIA+ rights, access to education, immigrant rights, and racial justice.

Celebrating Pride

We'll be at festivals across the country this month. Find us at an event near you!

NARAL members at Los Angeles Pride

As an LGBTQIA+ person, I've been thinking about the strength in our community, advocacy, and joy. That's part of what makes Pride so special to me. I've signed petitions, registered people to vote, and danced on rainbow floats–all at the same Pride Festival.

In my hometown of Orlando, FL, I've felt the strength of the LGBTQIA+ community in moments of joy, struggle, and unspeakable tragedy. In a time when extremists seem hellbent on attacking our rights, especially those in the trans community, it's more important than ever to come together and fight back.

I highlighted the importance of intentional intersectionality in our advocacy at the beginning of this email. June is full of opportunities to do just that. I hope to see you at an event soon.
