The Abortion Review Report published in April 2023 contains one extreme recommendation after another. It includes a proposal to decriminalise abortion (that would effectively permit abortion on request up to birth), a recommendation to scrap the three-day period of reflection, and a call for the near total suppression of freedom of conscience protections for healthcare workers and it fails to address the fact that there has been nearly 28,500 abortions in Ireland in the first four years of the abortion law.
In addition, a Private Members Bill from People Before Profit calling for extreme abortion laws passed Second Reading in Dáil Éireann in May 2023.
Summer 2023 is a really important time for us to engage with our politicians and remind them that the referendum promises of ‘rare’ abortions must not be forgotten.
Please take a moment to get involved in this Humanity Campaign over the coming weeks by selecting options below. Remember even the smallest effort will make a big difference.
To usher in abortion on request up-to-birth in the UK, pro-abortion advocates are coldly and cruelly exploiting the case of a woman who had an illegal abortion at 34 weeks and received a custodial sentence earlier this week for what happened.
Carla Foster, 44, who admits to being “plagued by nightmares and flashbacks” after seeing the face of her aborted daughter, had contacted the British Pregnancy Advisory Service (BPAS) requesting abortion pills that are only available up to 10 weeks. She admitted in court to lying about the stage in pregnancy she was at when she sought the “pills by post” in May 2020 during one of the Covid lockdowns.
A post-mortem examination of her baby daughter, who was named Lily, confirmed that the stage in pregnancy was around 34 week’s gestation. After the court’s decision to impose a sentence of 18 months (half of which is to be spent in custody), BPAS, who supplied Ms Foster with the abortion pills, took to the airwaves calling for abortion to be completely decriminalised in the UK to permit abortion on request up to birth.
Along with other pro-abortion campaigners, BPAS refused to address any of the many inconvenient truths brought to light by the case and instead resorted to calling abortion “healthcare” as they enthusiastically beat the drum for unrestricted access to abortion throughout the entire nine months of pregnancy.
In taking this approach, they displayed reckless disregard for the lives of women, not just unborn babies. The practice of at home ‘DIY’ abortion which they support and operate, cuts out the in-person meeting between the woman and her doctor, leaving it wide open for situations to arise, just like happened in this awful case, where the pregnancy may well be much further advanced than the person seeking the abortion pills declares. This straightaway puts the lives of women at serious risk, as well as the lives of their unborn babies. The same practice of at home ‘DIY’ abortion has been given the green light by the Irish government as well, despite all the warnings of what it could lead to. If the backers of ‘at home’ abortion, who dishonestly refer to abortion as healthcare, truly cared about the health and welfare of women, they would immediately cease the practice of telemedicine abortion. But as we’ve seen once again this past week, abortion campaigners are much more preoccupied with exploiting every situation that arises to push for more abortion. Sadly, they are a long way away from taking a sincere and honest look at the death and havoc they are wreaking on the lives of women as well as on the lives of innocent and defenceless unborn babies, like baby Lily.
The episode delved into the legal perspectives surrounding this issue and draws attention to the heartbreaking reality of this situation, and how both mother and baby were utterly failed in this circumstance!
Abortion campaigner Janey Starling said on TalkTV that having an abortion within minutes of a baby being born at full-term was a “personal decision” for the woman and that there should be nothing in the law standing in the way of such an abortion taking place. While her remarks are absolutely repulsive, they are nothing more than the logical follow-on of recent calls for the full decriminalisation of abortion, both in the UK and Ireland.
The Archbishop of Armagh has described as “ideological colonisation” plans by the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland to make it compulsory for all post-primary schools in Northern Ireland to teach students about abortion provision and where it can be accessed.
The Primate of All Ireland, Archbishop Eamon Martin joined with the other Catholic bishops in Northern Ireland in describing the move by Secretary of State Chris Heaton-Harris MP as extremely radical.
In a statement the bishops said: "Having already imposed some of the most radical abortion laws in the world on the people of Northern Ireland, without their consent, the secretary of state now seems determined to impose an ideologically biased view of abortion on all schools, irrespective of parental rights or school ethos."
They added: "This is radical legislation the British government doesn’t even impose on schools in Britain, where the right of parents to be involved in decisions about such ethical and pastoral issues is fully respected. There is no such thing as a neutral view on abortion. There is no such thing as a value-free or ethically neutral approach to the question of when life begins and when we have a duty to protect and care for all human life. These are matters subject to sincerely held differences of opinion across the world."
The bishops called on the Secretary of State and the NI Human Rights Commission (which backs the Government’s decision) to “move away from their tendency to ideological colonisation in this area and trust parents, teachers, young people and local politicians in Northern Ireland to balance the rights and responsibilities involved.”

We are putting out a call for anyone in possession of any documents, photographs, correspondence, etc. relevant to the Irish pro-life movement throughout the decades. We are particularly keen to receive anything in your possession related to periods such as the 1983 referendum. A comprehensive history of the pro-life movement is yet to be written, but the historians of the future will need primary sources. We are asking for people to get in touch with the Pro Life Campaign if they possess such material (no matter how old or dusty!) to ensure it is preserved now and not lost to the ages.
