Dear friend,

Did you see my email last week?

90% of debt contracts forced upon the global South are rooted in UK law - this means we can actually make a concrete difference to the lives of so many people by getting law changed in this country. And right now, we've got a chance to make that happen.

This is a perfect opportunity to put right the wrongs of colonialism, and break free the choke hold of poverty on global South countries that are in debt distress.

To find out more, join us for our upcoming webinar: Stop Cowboy Lenders

Wednesday 21 June at 6:30pm
Register for the webinar here
We'll hear from:
  • Precious Kalombwana, an environmental activist and campaigner in Zambia, which is one of the 54 countries in debt distress. As we know, BlackRock has been holding up negotiations which could lead to debt cancellation. But with this new law, cowboy lenders like Blackrock can no longer get away with such despicable behaviour.
  • Mahmood Patel, a coconut farmer using restorative practices to heal farming land after the colonial mono-cropping of Barbados. Barbados is also one of the 54 countries currently in debt crisis, and is a key country driving a climate summit next week in Paris.
The line up also includes our Head of Policy, Tim Jones, who can go into the nitty gritty of how this new law would stop the exploitation of countries in debt, Heidi Chow our Executive Director and Dario Kenner, Head of Policy from CAFOD, who are working with us on the campaign. You won't want to miss it!

We hope to see you there,
In solidarity,
Eva, Zak and the whole Debt Justice team
Dear friend,

Since we launched our campaign for a new law to Stop Cowboy lenders, thousands of us have written to our MPs demanding action. This new law could force big banks and hedge funds to cancel the debt of lower income countries.

And we’re making some real progress, we’ve been offered a meeting with some of the policymakers who would be responsible for making the law a reality

Find out more: join us on 21 June

But we need to keep up the pressure and make sure they get the message loud and clear about why this new law is so important. 54 countries are in debt crisis. We’re hearing every day from allies on the frontline, Teyonna Delice-Meyers from the Caribbean Policy Development Centre recently told us:

‘We in the Caribbean urge our friends in the UK to support a new law that requires private lenders to participate in debt restructuring initiatives’.

That’s why we’ve organised a special online event, at 6.30pm on the 21 June, so you can find out more about what would be in the new law and hear directly from activists in Zambia and Barbados about the impact of the debt crisis.

You're invited: Wednesday 21 June

We’re holding this event on the eve of an important summit being held in Paris on debt and the climate crisis. So much is at stake, but instead of just cancelling debt to help countries deal with the climate crisis, rich countries are pushing more loans.

It’s a scandal, we need real solutions like a new law to Stop Cowboy Lenders, not more loans

As ever, thank you so much for everything you do!

We hope to see you there.

In solidarity,

Eva, Zak, Tim and the whole Debt Justice team
