Debt Ceiling Deal

While I was pleased to see many needed provisions in the debt limit deal, H.R. 3746 does not go far enough to get America’s fiscal house in order. The most significant threat to our national security is our debt, and any action to address the debt limit must be accompanied by appreciable reforms and cuts. This debt limit deal fell short of making those needed changes.

H.R. 3746 suspends the debt limit until January 2025, after the next presidential election. This approach, far from exhibiting fiscal responsibility, does not provide a long-term solution to prevent a repeat of our current financial predicament when the suspension ends.

ImageFurthermore, the caps in the bill that limit discretionary appropriations for the upcoming two fiscal years lack the necessary ambition to tame our spiraling expenditures. H.R. 3746 has several commendable provisions, such as production reforms and mandatory offsets for expensive regulations.
I submitted an amendment to H.R. 3746 to repeal the entirety of the supplementary IRS funding remaining from the Inflation Reduction Act. As it stands, the bill preserves an astonishing 98% of the over $75 billion that the Democrats allocated to the IRS last year, beyond the agency's standard budget. This excess funding will be used to recruit an additional 87,000 IRS agents and ramp up audits on all American families and businesses. This is an unjustifiable increase in power and scope that I cannot support.

Memorial Day 2023

I hold a profound respect for our brave servicemen and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. During Memorial Day, we remember those who laid down their lives in the name of liberty and the pursuit of a safer America. Their courage and dedication to duty will not be forgotten.

ImageThe cost of our freedom is steep. It is paid not only on distant battlefields but also in the hearts of families who've lost a loved one in combat. These families carry a burden that most of us cannot begin to comprehend. To them, we offer our deepest sympathies, profound gratitude, and unwavering support. As a nation, we are duty-bound to care for those left behind.

On Monday, I attended the McLennan County Veterans Memorial Service to honor soldiers who have died for our country. I was encouraged by the large crowd of attendees who also paid their respects at Hewitt Park and other events across the 17th Congressional District of Texas. As Central and East Texans, we revere our country’s servicemen, servicewomen, and their families.
