San Francisco has endured many challenges these past two months. Violent incidents that have occurred across the city are indicative of the work that still needs to be done to ensure that we can create a safer community for all. In April and May, I voted to approve a new SFPD contract to ensure competitive hiring, passed legislation enabling eligible city employees to receive retirement benefits based on their prior military service, and continued to meet with neighborhood groups to discuss community needs and concerns.

SFPD Staffing


The San Francisco Police Department continues to face a severe shortage of officers. At present, SFPD is more than 500 officers short, and this number has the potential to increase to over 800. In April, I voted to approve a new contract for SFPD that aims to help retain and recruit police officers by offering a more competitive starting salary and other benefits. As Chair of the Public Safety and Neighborhood Services Committee, I am relentlessly committed to prioritizing the safety and cleanliness of our streets to ensure that our residents remain safe and secure.

Ensuring the Safety of Students & Faculty at SFUSD


After enduring three years of pandemic-related hardships, our school communities are struggling. Parents, students, and advocates have raised concerns regarding inadequate safety measures. In April, I sent a

Letter of Inquiry to SFUSD Superintendent Dr. Matt Wayne, asking how the district prioritizes creating safe environments and plans on taking action to prevent further incidents of violence in our schools. On April 26th, SFUSD responded by providing a

School Safety Overview . I look forward to continuing this important conversation with SFUSD leadership.

Hearing on the Housing Needs of Justice-Involved Adults


In April, I held a hearing on the housing needs for justice-involved adults based on the Recovery Summit Working Group’s recommendations. Addiction, homelessness, and housing are pressing issues for our city, and hearing the voices of those affected will allow us to take steps to address our crisis. We must invest more in reentry, transitional, and sober housing programs, as well as listen to those with lived experiences.

Hearing on 2022 Aging and Disability Affordable Housing Needs Assessment Report


I held a hearing on the

2022 Aging and Disability Affordable Housing Needs Assessment Report . The research sheds light on the concerning risk of displacement and homelessness that vulnerable senior and disabled populations face, often requiring housing with accessibility features that are difficult to come by in San Francisco's older housing stock.


It's our duty to prepare for our elders’ growing needs and to find viable solutions. Out of the findings in the report, I was concerned to learn of some older and disabled residents expressing frustration with poor levels of building maintenance at their affordable housing sites, which can pose accessibility and safety concerns for these residents.


Therefore, I will be asking the Mayor’s Office of Housing and Community Development and the Department of Homelessness and Supportive Housing to find out how much it would cost to repair all elevators in city-funded affordable housing sites and determine implementation plans.

Filicide Awareness Week & Pierce’s Pledge




On April 11th, my resolution declaring April 9 - April 15, 2023, as Filicide Awareness Week in San Francisco was unanimously passed by the Board of Supervisors. I introduced the resolution in support of Pierce's Pledge, an organization that empowers family law attorneys to contribute their efforts to protect and keep minor children safe during custody negotiations. Addressing Safety for Our Cyclists




The car crash that resulted in the tragic death of Ethan Boyes in the Presidio emphasizes the need for safer cycling infrastructure in San Francisco. My office joined the SFMTA, the

SF Bike Coalition, and Supervisor Chan’s office to conduct a bike lane audit of Arguello Boulevard and identify areas for improvement. I will continue to push SFMTA to adopt measures that ensure safer roads for everyone. To that end, my office committed $50,000 towards implementing the design and construction of protected bike lanes on Arguello. Thank you to Supervisor Chan for also committing $50,000, and to SFMTA for committing $100,000.
Enhancing Veteran’s Benefits

In May, the Board of Supervisors unanimously passed

my ordinance amending the Administrative Code to expand the definition of "public service" to include time served in the military. This allows members of the San Francisco Employees' Retirement System to purchase service credit for active duty time before City employment. This enables eligible employees to receive retirement benefits based on their prior military service, which can be important in attracting and retaining veterans as city employees. Providing retirement benefits for prior military service can also help veterans transition more smoothly into civilian life and provide them with greater financial security. This is a way for the city to honor the sacrifices made by our veterans in service to our country.

Friends of Lafayette Park surprised Lynne Newhouse Segal with a tree planting in honor of her contributions to Lafayette Park and the neighborhood. A Pacific Heights resident since ‘85, Lynne has dedicated her career to giving back to our city. Currently a Public Works Commissioner, Lynne is an active community leader with the Pacific Heights Residents Association, Back on Track, San Francisco Beautiful, and Friends of Lafayette Park.

Throughout the month of May, we celebrate AAPI heritage & culture. In one of our celebrations, I was thrilled to honor Recreation and Parks Commissioner Vanita Louie, a long-time community champion and Chinatown advocate. A former president of the Rotary Club of San Francisco Chinatown, she is a retired small business owner with over 25-years of experience in the hospitality industry. Vanita is an outstanding District 2 resident with decades of service and mentorship to AAPI leaders.
