Last week, Josh and his team worked hard to complete the new Pūlama Ola medical respite kauhale across from the State Capitol — hosting a Community Day on Wednesday for volunteers to get the units move-in ready, and a blessing ceremony on Friday.

Capitol district state employees came together to support the initiative in their backyard, working together to assemble furniture and put the final touches on the units located just steps from the governor's residence on the grounds of the Department of Health.

Two days later Kahu Kordell Kekoa conducted a traditional Hawaiian blessing of each room within the 12-unit village, which also includes a nurse’s station and a publicly accessible hygiene trailer.[link removed] [[link removed]]

“By embracing the idea of 'yes in my backyard,' we have the power to create a more compassionate community that nurtures change from within,” Governor Green said. "Just as aloha comes from within and is shared outwardly, we too can embody the spirit of aloha and inspire others to do the same.”

Pūlama Ola will serve inpatient and emergency room patients discharged from Honolulu hospitals who need a safe and stable place to continue to recover and would otherwise exit medical care into homelessness.

“Under Governor Green’s leadership, it took many people and organizations to get here today, all with the goal of providing a place for the houseless community,” Queen’s Health System President and CEO Jill Hoggard said. “This will help our houseless population by giving them resources and respite to be in a safe place and not on the streets.”

Officially opened yesterday, Pūlama Ola will save Hawaii taxpayers an estimated $800,000 per year by providing more effective and efficient care for the homeless community.

In the coming months, Governor Green will continue to take action on homelessness across our state, and we continue to keep you informed.
