News from Congressman Scott Fitzgerald

Thank you for reading my newsletter. Here's a summary of last week:

Message from Congressman Scott Fitzgerald

Good morning! I hope you had a very wonderful Memorial Day weekend and were able to reflect for a moment to remember those who paid the ultimate sacrifice to defend our freedom and way of life. We are so blessed to live in this great country and we must never forget those who have made it possible.

Let me update you on a few of the most important happenings from last week.

Last week, the House addressed several important issues facing the country. First, we voted to block the Biden administration's new EPA rule that will harm truckers and cause across-the-board increases in the price of goods. Second, we voted to block the Biden administration's bailout of student loan debt and freeze on payments. It's not fair to those who don't have debt or paid theirs back to hand out billions in tax payer dollars to bailout those who do. And last, we passed the HALT Fentanyl Act to permanently classify fentanyl-related substances as Schedule I drugs and empower law enforcement to get it off our streets.

In the Financial Services Committee, we held a hearing to conduct oversight of the Federal Housing Finance Agency and inquire about recent policy proposals by the Biden administration. And in the Judiciary Committee, we met to vote on several pieces of legislation, including the REINS Act, which would restore Congress's power over the bureaucracy and allow us to consider regulations more efficiently.

When I'm not voting or in committee, it's a pleasure to meet with constituents and community stakeholders about the issues impacting our communities. My door is always open and I cherish talking to folks back home about what really matters to them. I'm honored to serve you in our nation's capital and I thank you for trusting me with your vote in Congress.

- Scott

Passage of the HALT Fentanyl Act

The House passed the HALT Fentanyl Act. This critical legislation accomplishes a top legislative priority I have been advocating for since coming to Congress - to permanently classify fentanyl-related substances as Schedule I drugs.

Drug overdose is the leading cause of accidental death across the country and Fentanyl-driven overdoses are the leading cause of death for Americans between 18-45 y/o.

I’d like to share two moving stories of constituents from my district taken from their families too soon.

Archie Badura, of Oconomowoc, tragically passed away at the age of 19, due to an accidental overdose in 2014. His mother, Lauri Badura, founded SOFA INC. - Saving Others For Archie to advocate on behalf of those struggling with mental health and substance abuse.

Logan Rachwal, of Pewaukee, was also 19 and a freshman at UW-Milwaukee, passed away in 2021 from an overdose of three different forms of fentanyl. His parents, Erin and Rick, founded Love Logan Inc to end the stigma around mental health and fight substance abuse.

As a father and grandfather, this issue hits close to home. No parent should have to experience the pain the Badura and Rachwal families have had to endure.

Introduced Fair and Balanced FTC Act

Under President Biden, the FTC has become an ultra-partisan body that ignores dissenting voices, defies the rule of law and disregards congressionally imposed limits on agency jurisdiction in favor of advancing radical left policies.

The Commission should not act as an unaccountable, political arm of the party in power, but rather maintain its independent nature. This legislation would restore balance in the agency and refocus its efforts on considering constructive policies.

Bill to Restore Trust in Federal Reserve Passes Financial Services Committee

Policymakers at the highest levels of our federal government should earn their position by demonstrating merit for their position, not allegiance to a particular ideology.

My legislation ensures that the Vice Chair of Supervision, who oversees banking regulations, actually has real-world experience in the banking industry.

Financial Service Committee: Oversight on Federal Housing Finance Agency

The Financial Services Committee invited Sandra L. Thompson, Director, Federal Housing Finance Agency, for a hearing to conduct oversight on the agency. I'm concerned the current economic environment, rising interest rates, and recent new policies by the Biden administration are freezing young potential home owners from access to the market.

Judiciary Committee: Markup of REINS Act

The federal bureaucracy continues to grow larger and with diminished efficiency. I support the REINS Act which would reassert Congress' legislative authority and prevent excessive overreach by the executive branch in the federal rulemaking process. It would require every new "major rule" proposed by federal agencies to be approved by both the House and Senate before going into effect. The bill would also preserve Congress' authority to disapprove of a "nonmajor rule" through a joint resolution.
