Dear Friends,

As we find ourselves once again staring down the barrel of a potential debt ceiling breach, it’s a critical time to revisit and reinforce our core values: the importance of small government, fiscal responsibility, and lowering spending.

Each time we hit that limit, we're faced with a stark reminder of our spending habits as a nation. The habit of continuously raising the debt ceiling merely kicks the can down the road.

House Republicans delivered a common-sense proposal to President Biden designed to reduce government waste and save you money. I will continue to oppose any increase in debt limits that don't include major cuts in spending.

Sincerely,

Holding Open Border NGOs Accountable

This week, Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) joined me in issuing a joint letter to the National Board of FEMA's Emergency Food and Shelter Program, highlighting alarming concerns about Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) using federal grants to assist illegal immigration.

Since President Biden took office, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials have encountered over five million illegal aliens. This is a direct consequence of the Biden Administration’s policies. Of these encounters, nearly two million illegal aliens have been released into the U.S. in accordance with Department of Homeland Security (DHS) policy.

The full scope of this crisis is staggering. This week, I worked to shed light on the extent of NGO involvement at the southern border with a Dear Colleague letter to Congressional members highlighting the need for urgent action.

Your Tax Dollars Shouldn't Fund Illegal Immigration

On Wednesday, I introduced the "Protecting Federal Funds from Human Trafficking and Smuggling Act of 2023," a bill to prevent the misuse of federal funds by nonprofit organizations involved in human trafficking or alien smuggling.

This bill is a critical step in our fight against human trafficking and smuggling. By ensuring federal funds are not awarded to organizations that engage in these heinous activities, we can safeguard taxpayer dollars and hold bad actors accountable.

Saving Lives From Fentanyl

On Monday, I, along with Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett (TX-30), and 31 bipartisan cosponsors introduced the Bipartisan Secure Testing Resources Instead of Prosecuting (STRIP) Act. This legislation would exempt the possession, sale, or purchase of fentanyl testing equipment, including test strips, from the federal drug paraphernalia law.

The STRIP Act is a sensible, harm-reduction approach that ensures prescription drugs can be tested for fentanyl to prevent accidental overdose or death. This bipartisan legislation has my full support, and I applaud states like Texas that have taken significant steps to increase awareness of the dangers posed by opioids.

Fox Exclusive: Gooden demands answers from United Way on federal grant money going to free services for illegal immigrants

Texas Rep. Lance Gooden, a Republican, led a letter with House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, and committee colleague Rep. Tom McClintock, R-Calif., to the CEO of United Way Worldwide (UWW) demanding answers on federal grant money reportedly going to free services for illegal immigrants.

The Republicans sent the letter to UWW President and CEO Angela Williams regarding the reports of nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) using federal grant money to give illegal immigrants free food, services, shelter and transportation.

The lawmakers wrote the U.S. "is experiencing the worst border crisis in our nation’s history" as a "direct result" of President Biden and his administration’s "actions."
