Dear Friend,

Memorial Day is particularly special here at VOA, and we join you in
honoring the courage and sacrifice of our fallen heroes.

For the thousands of veterans getting support from VOA centers today,
their pathway to health and happiness reflects the precious ideals
defended by military heroes who've gone before us: life,
liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

James is reflecting on these brave heroes more deeply as a veteran
himself. Serving overseas in Germany, James was lucky to return to
civilian life, but his life took turns he never expected.

While in a new IT job he loved, James suffered a stroke that left him
almost completely blind. The challenges of being visually impaired in
a demanding job, not to mention in daily life, were overwhelming.
Underlying mental distress from his military experience compounded the
situation, and James spiraled into depression and alcoholism, losing
his income and eventually his home.

VOA staff counseling and resources helped James to rekindle his inner
strength. Today he's healthier and happier, living in his own
apartment and using his specialized skills-training to navigate the
world, as determined as, if not more than before.

Helping today's veterans get the care they need, ensures our
fallen heroes' sacrifice is not forgotten.

It's the right thing to do when we help a veteran in need! I
know you share this value as a VOA friend and supporter. Here's
how you can continue to show kindness to those in need, including our
country's veterans - make a Memorial Day gift.

Our prayers and remembrance go out for the brave souls who gave their
all in military service, and our sincere thanks to military members
and their families, carrying the torch of country pride and honor.

With gratitude,

Tanisha Smith, Vice President
Volunteers of America

Special thanks to our friends at Volunteers of America Ohio &
Indiana for sharing James's story!
