At least 6 GOP senators went on record saying what Trump did was wrong -- and according to Sen. Sherrod Brown, many many more said it behind closed doors. But only Mitt Romney listened to his conscience and voted to convict. And now Donald Trump Jr. is calling for Romney to be kicked out of the party.
The GOP will stomach anything to keep Trump in power.
Trump separated immigrant families and put children in cages. Then-congressman and now-Senator Kevin Cramer (R-ND) said there’s “nothing inhumane” about putting kids in cages. He even compared the cages to fences around playgrounds.
Trump called Nazis in Charlottesville “very fine people.” Open white nationalist GOP Rep. Steve King rushed to his defense, saying, “it looks to me that...the facts do support the president’s statement.”
And now Mitch McConnell turned Trump’s impeachment into a sham trial. His next goal is to turn 2020 into a sham election.
Trump’s behavior and the GOP’s excuses and coverups for it are now on the ballot.
And that means suppressing every Democratic vote possible is McConnell and the GOP’s path to victory.
In 2016, millions of Democrats stayed home or were intimidated from voting at all. And thenTrump won Wisconsin by 0.77%, Michigan by 0.23%, and Pennsylvania by 0.72%.
If Democrats fail to turn out in November, Trump will win again. We’ll lose our House majority. And Mitch McConnell will keep his grip on the Senate. The GOP majority will pass even larger tax cuts for Trump’s corporate donors while slashing Medicare, Medicaid, and SNAP benefits. Trump's attacks on immigrants and outright contempt for the Constitution will only get worse.
When Democrats Turn Out is dedicated to preventing a repeat of the 2016 election by educating voters in key swing states, fighting voter suppression, and increasing turnout in every single key Senate and House battleground race.
The president was acquitted for crimes he clearly committed, and the GOP has signalled they won’t do anything to stop him from rigging the election to win in November. But right now, we’re falling VERY short of our fundraising goals. If we can’t raise another $1,091 today, we’ll need to significantly scale back our efforts.
