Dear  john,

I hope that you and your family are well. This past week in Washington was a busy one, and this upcoming week leading up to Memorial Day promises to be action-packed as well. I’ll be sure to bring you updates on the pressing issues we’ll cover, from the debt ceiling to the latest in weaponized government, via social media and this newsletter.

Debt Ceiling

After more than 100 days of inaction, President Biden finally conceded that he must come to the table to negotiate meaningful spending cuts to pair  as part of any package to raise the debt ceiling.

Our country is nearly $32 trillion dollars in debt, largely fueled by liberal spending programs. House Republicans are making a simple demand – before we raise the borrowing limit yet again, we must implement commonsense measures to cut spending and reduce the bureaucratic bloat that fuels it.

TWEET: Democrats would rather DEFAULT than cut spending.

As the Democrats in the Senate and White House threaten default, House Republican leadership and the House Freedom Caucus are united behind our commonsense plan to raise the debt ceiling and cut spending - the Limit, Save, Grow Act. We’re calling for the Senate to pass a plan, and asking for the President to accept the fact that spending must come down.

I went into the lion’s den on MSNBC last Friday to stress the importance of this point.  I will bring you updates on the situation as the President meets with Speaker McCarthy and negotiations continue to unfold. I’m committed to bringing fiscal sanity back to Washington and will not be cowed by threats and brinksmanship from the Democrats.

I also spoke to Bo Thompson and Beth Troutman this morning on WBT radio about the current state of negotiations and the details of our plan.

The Week in Weaponized Government

In the Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government hearing last week, we brought in brave FBI whistleblowers to testify about the abuses they witnessed within the Bureau, including the corruption that flows through the Bureau from the top on down.

WATCH: Full Hearing on the Weaponization of the Federal Government

One particularly startling revelation from the whistleblowers is that Bank of America (BofA) turned over a list of EVERYONE who used a BofA credit or debit card in the DC area between January 5-7th, 2021 – without any regard as to whether those people participated in the events of January 6th.

They also overlaid that list with one showing which of those people bought firearms, and then gave all of this information to the FBI.

The deep state surveillance apparatus has a seamless connection with large corporations, and it’s a connection that must be severed. I will continue to work towards exposing this rotten behavior and bringing the hammer of the law down on these rogue agencies.

Last week, Special Counsel John Durham finally released his much-anticipated report, which fully exposed the Russiagate scam once and for all. It is a damning account of the corruption and crooked practices of the FBI and their allies. The FBI is fully politicized, and is now acting as the muscle for the Democrat party. The full report is worth a read, but the Wall Street Journal has a thorough summary of it as well.

TWEET: It was all a lie, right from the start

We also heard testimony last week from Mark Houck, a pro-life activist whose home was raided by the FBI. We heard from no less than a Democrat Congresswoman that the DOJ engaged in selective prosecution against Mr. Houck, which is plainly unconstitutional.

“Mostly Peaceful” – Countering Left-Wing Violence

Politicized bureaucrats and the Democrat Party claim that the greatest threat to our homeland is so-called right-wing extremism, but they conveniently ignore threats like our wide-open border and the scourge of left-wing violence from groups like Antifa.

On Tuesday, I led a hearing in the Oversight Subcommittee of the Homeland Security Committee on the threat of left-wing violence and the need for greater attention from federal law enforcement.

One of our witnesses, Riley Gaines, was recently held hostage by left-wing campus radicals after she spoke out on the necessity of keeping men out of women’s sports. I appeared on Fox News with Ms. Gaines before the hearing to talk about her experience and the need for federal coordination:

One of our other witnesses, Julio Rosas, is an intrepid journalist who was on the ground for the destructive riots during the summer of 2020. A U.S. Marine, Julio does what real journalists should – putting himself in the center of the action to bring the truth to the American people.

The hearing produced several shocking moments – including our witnesses recounting their experiences facing left-wing violence and the Democrat members slamming them in response.

This is an issue we’ll be continuing to monitor, and our subcommittee will be swift in conducting rigorous oversight of DHS.

Police Week

This past week was National Police Week, and I’m proud to be an original cosponsor of the POLICE Act, which passed the House last week. This legislation will help keep police officers safe and make it easier to remove criminal illegal aliens, especially those who assault law enforcement, from the U.S.

POST: POLICE Act

I’ve had the pleasure of meeting many of our great North Carolina law enforcement officers over the years, and I want to extend my greatest thanks to them for working hard to keep our communities safe.

I’m also reminded of our brave officers who died in the line of duty, and the sacrifices that they and their families have endured. If you’re able, take some time to thank your local police department - not only during police week, but every week.

I also want to extend my gratitude to the heroic first responders who rushed to the scene of last week’s fire in South Park in Charlotte. They were able to rescue over a dozen people from the blaze. Tragically, two construction workers were killed in the fire. I ask you to join me in praying for their families. My office is closely monitoring the situation and the ensuing investigation.
