We all know that the rising costs of food, energy and medicines, the deepening of global inequality and the climate crisis are not inevitable. But our global economy is set up to allow these things to happen and to get worse. Why?

Because just a few giant corporations hold so much power that they can effectively make up the rules – all in the name of enormous profit.

I’m reaching out today, not to tell you how bad things are as they stand – but to tell you they can be changed. In the last year we’ve had two big steps forward – from winning a climate loss and damage fund at the UN climate summit in Egypt, to the development of a science-sharing vaccine hub in South Africa to bypass big pharma. Both these breakthroughs were possible because people like you and me refused to accept the status quo.

While the world is battered by a cost of living crisis, still recovering from the worst pandemic in a century, and struggling to cope with the effects of disastrous climate change, the profits of the biggest 500 corporations on the planet have nearly doubled, exceeding $3 trillion in 2021.

In addition to the grotesquely unequal distribution of wealth and power, corporate power also has adverse effects on democracy. Powerful corporations can actively use their copious resources to influence government policy and decision-making, leading to a lack of accountability and transparency in the political system.

Just last year dozens of governments across the world were sued for millions of pounds in secret tribunals. Fossil fuel companies are the biggest users of this system, challenging the governments’ introduction of policies meant to protect the environment and the climate.

Not many people know about this. Because these fossil fuel companies are suing behind closed doors in secret tribunals through labyrinthine trade deals.

The lack of democratic oversight and influence blocks the urgent climate action that we so desperately need and the public supports.
