Dear Friends,

May was a relatively quiet month in terms of the County Board Meetings, so I will summarize them briefly for you before turning to a very important choice Arlington voters will have over the coming 35 days. The Sheriff's race is the most important race/election you may not have heard about. Jose Quiroz is my choice. I'll tell you why below.
Sheriff Jose Quiroz outside the Arlington County Courthouse
The May Board Meetings focused on a senior housing facility, the walkway from Crystal City to the Airport, and several decisions on land use designed to help with economic development. None of the items were particularly controversial: I supported both the decision to allow for consideration of more senior housing on North Glebe Road and funding for the walkway that will make Arlington one of the few places in the country where you can walk from the Airport to our community. Reply to this email if you have specific questions on other items on the Board's May agenda.
I was honored to join Arlington Neighborhood Village on May 15th to speak about the importance of connection and volunteerism as neighbors help neighbors age in place.
Jose Quiroz for Sheriff
Arlington's race for Sheriff is critical for our efforts to reform our criminal justice system. We have taken steps to strengthen trust between our police and our community: we had a police practice working group, now have a civilian oversight board, and we have increased police salaries.

Our Sheriff's Office also needs our full attention and strong leadership. Specifically, we need to invest in better medical care for those in our jail and we need to recover from COVID by re-instituting programming. We also need thoughtful engagement and oversight to improve morale. We need a leader who will put Arlington's ideals regarding justice into practice with energy and an honest, can-do approach.

Jose Quiroz is my choice among the candidates for Sheriff this year. He has a servant’s heart, strong work ethic, and a leadership style that is engaging, transparent, and accountable. I believe he is the best choice to serve those remanded to care in the jail, lead the Sheriff’s Office, and engage with our community as a whole. I am proud to endorse Jose Quiroz for Sheriff in the June 20th Democratic Primary.
Jose is a caring leader who is committed to a safe and progressive jail that treats each resident with dignity and respect by improving medical care and increasing family support.
Jose has impressed me through his leadership of the Sheriff's office this year and his community involvement over the last few years. This year, he identified a high tech solution to safety for those in the jail and showed a diligent, persistent, and poised approach in our budget discussions.

Over the last few years, Jose led Arlington's 9/11 Race from 2019 to 2021, a huge undertaking that required engaging with multiple stakeholders. I have listened to and engaged with Jose about transparency and accountability. I trust him to be an honest and hard working leader.

Jose's personal experience and commitment to Arlington will also make him a great Sheriff and lead me to ask you to help me raise a specific, limited amount, to help him win on June 20th. Jose grew up in Arlington, going to school here. He is our first Latino Sheriff. He grew up quickly as he lost his father as a 13 year old. He is a Veteran of the Marine Corps and a 22 year employee of the Sheriff's Office, rising through the ranks. To learn more about Jose, go here: [link removed]

Please vote for Jose Quiroz over the next 35 days through June 20th. If you are able, please also consider joining me in contributing what you can to help Jose win. He needs our help to raise the $2,132 to do so. Click on the blue button above to contribute.

Thank you for your consideration and the opportunity to serve you,

Matt
