Hello John,

One year ago, our nation stood still when a white supremacist killed 10 people and left three injured during a racist massacre at Tops supermarket in Buffalo, NY.

The gunman was fueled by hatred for Black and brown Americans. He even scribbled a note across his assault rifle with the words, “Here’s your reparations,” alongside his white supremacist manifesto outlining his plan to target the majority-Black neighborhood.

Black Americans know the traumatic impact of gun violence more than any other demographic group. We also know how deadly guns are when they are in the hands of racist domestic terrorists. Despite this reality, our leaders have allowed guns to flood our communities with no recourse.

Because safety is never guaranteed to us, we have no choice but to fight for it. The only way to honor the victims and the hundreds of thousands of Americans we’ve lost to gun violence is to demand Congress pass gun safety legislation starting with a federal ban on assault weapons like the one used in Buffalo.

The gun lobby wants us to remain hopeless so they can profit off of these tragedies. But we refuse to give up fighting for a safer world because our children, friends, family, and neighbors deserve to grow up in a nation that protects and values their lives.

It's a challenge we must take on every single day. Instead of becoming numb, we have the power to channel our collective grief into change with gun safety solutions that will save lives. I hope you join us in the fight to end gun violence.
