John,
Everything that lowers wages also lowers eventual Social Security benefits. In fact, the only reason our Social Security system has a projected shortfall is that the super-wealthy have hoovered up more and more wealth while working people are left with less.
One way that corporate America suppresses wages is with subminimum wages, often in the form of the “tipped minimum wage” that’s far lower than the minimum. The federal subminimum wage is less than ⅓ of the minimum wage, which is already far below a living wage.
Not only are millions of tipped workers single mothers, but in the restaurant industry, Mothers’ Day is the biggest sales day of the year. Imagine that – all of those single mothers forced to work through the holiday for wages as low as $2.13, the federal subminimum wage, across the country. It’s an utter disgrace.
That’s why Social Security Works supports the One Fair Wage campaign to end subminimum wages and ensure that workers can earn what they’re worth! Sign now: Demand a single, fair minimum wage everywhere in the country!
Thank you,
Social Security Works
