Rep. Troy E. Nehls Votes YES to Pass the Secure the Border Act of 2023 Greetings! I wanted to take a moment to share with you a recap on what happened last week in Texas' 22nd District and the United States House of Representatives. This Week in Washington Rep. Troy E. Nehls Votes YES to Pass the Secure the Border Act of 2023 This week, the U.S. House of Representatives took historic action and passed H.R.2, the Secure the Border Act of 2023, which would restart border wall construction, improve the asylum system, reduce the incentives for illegal immigration, criminalize visa overstays, hire more border patrol officers, and help employers to ensure that the workers they are hiring are legal and authorized to work in the United States. Due to President Biden's failed policies, our nation is facing the worst border crisis in American history. Since President Biden took office, over 5 million illegal aliens have invaded our country, where they have killed our citizens, robbed hardworking Americans of healthcare, increased housing costs, crowded our nation’s public schools, and created a country filled with chaos. My House Republican colleagues and I are committed to the safety of our country and putting America first. Watch my remarks on the Floor of the U.S. House of Representatives HERE. Rep. Troy E. Nehls Speaks at Highways and Transit Subcommittee Hearing on Overcoming Supply Chain Challenges to Deliver for America Due to the Biden Administration's extreme Green New Deal agenda and the COVID-19 pandemic, our nation has been facing a supply chain crisis, creating challenges for our nation's trucking industry. The trucking industry is responsible for transporting 70% of our nations freight, and currently, the industry is short 78,000 drivers. During a hearing on the Transportation and Infrastructure Subcommittee on Highways and Transit, my colleagues and I listened to industry professionals on the best ways to combat the supply chain issues and make the trucking industry more attractive to employees and encourage more individuals to join the industry that contributes significantly to our nation's economy. I strongly support expanding and investing in truck parking. Most people do not know that there is only 1 parking spot for every 11 trucks on the road, this is a serious safety issue that Congress must address. At the hearing, I was able to talk about my proposed legislation, the Trucker Bathroom Access Act, which would simply allow truckers expanded access to bathrooms while they are on the road. Truckers struggle to find a place to stop and use the bathroom while transporting goods across the country because businesses have closed their facilities due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and many of them have yet to re-open access. I remain committed to ensuring that truckers are able to use the bathroom while they are at work, and to make the industry more appealing to potential employees. Nehls Attends House Judiciary Committee Markup This week, the House Judiciary Committee Republicans voted to advance several pieces of legislation that support our nation's law enforcement officers in a time where the Democrat Party is promoting soft-on-crime policies and the defund the police movement. During the markup, the Judiciary Committee passed H.Res.363, which expresses support for “National Police Week” and honors the 556 law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty during 2022. I was proud to support this key resolution, along with the other pro-police bills. Our law enforcement officers put their lives on the line every day to protect the communities they serve. My House Republican colleagues and I will always back the blue. Watch my remarks from the markup HERE. Rep. Troy E. Nehls Joins Varney & Co. on Fox Business Watch my full interview HERE. Chairman Nehls Speaks at Subcommittee on Railroads, Pipelines, and Hazardous Materials Hearing on Rail Supply Chain Resilience and Challenges As Chairman of the Transportation and Infrastructure Subcommittee on Railroads, Pipelines, and Hazardous Materials, it is important to highlight how some of the Biden Administration's policies and the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic have contributed to ongoing supply chain challenges for our nation's transportation modes, including freight railroads. During this week's hearing, the Committee was able to hear from witnesses about the current challenges that the freight rail industry is facing in meeting supply chain goals and the ongoing efforts to address issues including vaccine mandates, excessive government transfer payments that incentivized people not to work, and an infrastructure law that prioritizes green projects over those that add real capacity to transportation modal networks. The freight rail industry is integral to our nation's economy, being responsible for transporting nearly one-third of the nation's freight. It is time to get our nation back on track. Watch my opening remarks from the hearing HERE. Rep. Troy E. Nehls Joins Speaker Kevin McCarthy at the Third Annual Back the Blue Bike Tour This week, I was honored to join Kevin McCarthy, the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, at the third annual Back the Blue Bike Tour, where we paid tribute to the men and women in blue who gave their lives to protect and serve communities across the nation. As someone who served in law enforcement for nearly 30 years, I have seen what it means for someone to give their life in service to their community. Far too many law enforcement officers have lost their lives in the line of service since President Joe Biden took office. The continued assault on law enforcement officers must come to an end. My colleagues and I who attended the event are committed to recognizing the valor, dignity, and integrity of police officers across the nation and express our sincere support for those who defend our communities against criminals and lawlessness. Since the 1930’s, Congress has enacted 18 farm bills, which have traditionally focused on commodity support, crop insurance, conservation, nutrition assistance, and an array of other programs that address rural development, broadband deployment, and trade. The Farm Bill goes through an extensive process where it is proposed, debated, passed by Congress, and signed into law by the President. The current Farm Bill, the Agriculture Improvement Act of 2023, is set to expire on September 30, 2023. The House Committee on Agriculture recently launched a survey that is now open to the public to include input on how various programs are working for producers, stakeholders, and consumers around the country. Constituent input is vital and I encourage you to click here to provide your input for the 2023 Farm Bill: 2023 Farm Bill Feedback | House Agriculture Committee. Service Academy Nominations Are Now Open My office is now accepting Service Academy Nominations. One of the privileges of serving in the United States House of Representatives is the opportunity to nominate outstanding young people from the 22nd Congressional District of Texas to be considered for appointment to our nation’s service academies. Admission to a service academy is a two-tiered process. First, the candidate must meet the minimum standards set by the individual academy. Second, the candidate must complete the congressional application by October 6, 2023, to be considered for an interview in our office with the nomination review board. Please note, the ultimate selection of appointees rests solely with academy officials and is based on their competitive evaluation of all nominees. The checklist and application can be found on my website. If you have any questions, please email [email protected] or call my district office at 346-762-6600.
