Tomorrow is the last day to vote in the School Board Caucus--the last day to make a big difference in determining who will do this super important job.

Why? Because our schools impact our quality of life and our future.

Below are the two minute videos from the two candidates, their bios, and a video of the school board debate, that I shared with you last week and am sharing again, as you consider who to vote for. I also want to share with you why I am voting for Miranda Turner.

Miranda Turner is a parent, a Democrat, and her priorities—student instructional support and mental health, valuing teachers, and serving all students well — are sound. Miranda has engaged thoughtfully and consistently over the last two years and shown that she wants to serve our community in one of the hardest jobs in Arlington. Miranda is the better choice in this election: she has both my vote and my endorsement in the School Board Caucus.

Meet the Candidates (From the Candidates)

Miranda Turneris the daughter of a Wakefield grad and was born and raised in Washington, D.C. She has lived in Arlington for nine years. She graduated from Brown University, majoring in public policy and playing volleyball, and spent a semester at Bank Street College of Education, where she took classes in education policy and student-taught second grade. Miranda earned her law degree at UVA Law, where she met and eventually married Andy, and they live with their three children in the Green Valley neighborhood.

Miranda has been an APS parent since 2015 and currently has a rising APS middle schooler and two APS elementary students. She was a founding member of the Drew PTA in 2019 and still serves as Social Media Chair, is involved with the Montessori Public School of Arlington PTA, and is the site liaison for the Drew/Green Valley Girls on the Run team. She is a member of the Early Childhood Education Committee for the Advisory Council on Teaching & Learning.

Miranda volunteers as a Precinct Captain and spent time last fall knocking doors and poll greeting to elect local Democrats. She is also a member of the Green Valley Civic Association Executive Committee and serves as delegate to the Civic Federation. Miranda works as a lawyer at a firm in D.C., dedicating substantial time to volunteer pro bono work. She currently represents Planned Parenthood, litigating abortion rights pending in federal court, and has mentored younger lawyers in housing rights cases and parole proceedings.

Two Minutes from Angelo Cocchiaro on why Vote for him

Angelo Cocchiaro

Angelo Cocchiaro has spent the last six years in work on issues related to students and schools. Angelo has been a student organizer, mobilizing his student peers on issues affecting them. He is prepared to advocate in the very same spirit for our most important APS stakeholders: students. Angelo is also a former childcare provider and certified physical fitness & nutrition professional, part of the reason he is putting equity in food policy at the center of his campaign. Angelo also brings to the table a background of academic research in Title IX policy, gender-based violence in educational settings, and childcare policy.

Angelo’s involvement in our community dates back nearly a decade to 2014. Then, as a 13-year-old, Angelo participated in the Honor Flight Network with his granddad, taking military veterans to the Iwo Jima Memorial near where he lives now in Rosslyn. Angelo now sits on the APS School Health Advisory Board and is a member of a range of civic organizations, including the Arlington Rotary Club and its Youth Committee, the Radnor-Ft. Meyer Heights (RAFOM) Civic Association, and others. Angelo is a working group member of the Arlington County Food Security Coalition. Having experienced food insecurity himself, Angelo knows how important the issue is, especially as pandemic-era assistance programs are ending.

Angelo is running for the Arlington School Board to bring new voices to the table, bring people together, and deliver on the change that's overdue.
