John, I’ve got good news and bad news about our work to permanently protect the Boundary Waters.
First, the bad news: U.S. Representative Pete Stauber introduced legislation just last week that would REVERSE the Biden Administrations 20-year mining ban within the headwaters of the Boundary Waters and Voyageur National Park. This legislation would be a devastating setback in the fight to permanently protect America’s most visited Wilderness and sets a dangerous precedent for our nation’s special places.
Here’s the good news: Because of Save the Boundary Waters’ supporters (like you!), we have made significant progress to protect the Wilderness at the state level: just this week Minnesota Republican Senator Abeler introduced the Boundary Waters Permanent Protection Bill in the Minnesota legislature which is a clone bill of the legislation introduced by Minnesota Senator Kelly Morrison in January. We now have a bipartisan coalition of state legislators! This new legislation will permanently protect state-owned lands in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness from sulfide-ore copper mining.
But, the fight to permanently protect the Boundary Waters from sulfide-ore copper mining takes both federal and state level protections: we must make the Boundary Waters a forever Wilderness by pushing for permanent protection of this beloved watery wilderness.

January’s historic 20-year mining ban only prevents mining on federal lands - and that is under attack and at risk of reversal. January’s historic 20-year mining ban only prevents mining on federal lands - and that is under attack and at risk of reversal. In fact, a hearing for Rep. Stauber’s bill attacking the Boundary Waters’ 20-year ban on mining in its headwaters will take place in Washington, D.C. tomorrow. Becky Rom, National Chair of the Campaign to Save the Boundary Waters, is the only witness who will testify on behalf of protecting the Boundary Waters.
Take action here and urge your elected officials to protect the Boundary Waters permanently. [[link removed]]
