Friends,

Like you, I’m deeply concerned about the state of our democracy.

In recent years, we’ve seen unprecedented attacks on voting rights -- particularly for communities of color and historically disenfranchised Americans -- fabricated accusations of voter fraud designed to sow doubt in the integrity of our elections, and antagonistic political gerrymandering, which causes both sides to move further in the direction of polarization.

I believe we must take action NOW to protect the fundamental principles of our democracy -- before it’s too late.

The Voting Rights Act was one of the most critical pieces of legislation passed in the 20th century. It helped -- among other things -- ensure that all Americans, regardless of race, had equal access to the ballot box. But in recent years, we've seen this critical law weakened by the Supreme Court and attacked by state legislatures nationwide.

In Georgia, a law was passed that makes it harder for people to vote by mail, limits early voting, and makes it a crime to give food or water to voters waiting in line. This law is designed to suppress voters' voices and make it harder for them to exercise their right to vote.

On the topic of election denialism, some politicians -- inspired by Donald Trump -- refuse to accept the results of free and fair elections, spreading lies and conspiracy theories about voter fraud that have been thoroughly debunked. This undermines the very foundations of our democracy and threatens to tear our country apart.

Political gerrymandering is also a serious problem eroding the integrity of our electoral system. When politicians can draw their own district boundaries, they can pick their own voters and ensure they will be re-elected year after year, even if they don't represent the interests of the people they serve.

We need to act now. That’s why I’ve introduced and have continued fighting for the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act -- to restore the full protections of the 1965 Voting Rights Act and protect our democracy for generations to come.

This legislation would not give an advantage to either political party. It would protect our elections from interference, partisan gerrymandering, dark money, and voter suppression. All Americans -- Republicans, Democrats, and Independents alike -- should support it.

If you agree, I’m asking for your help: Will you add your name to our petition to support comprehensive voting rights legislation and protect our democracy? [[link removed]]

We cannot allow those who seek to destroy our democracy to succeed. It's up to us to stand up and fight for what's right. We need to pass this vital legislation and ensure that the voices of all Americans are heard.

Thank you for your support, and let's continue to work together to protect the fundamental principles of our democracy.

Tim Kaine
