I have just arrived in London for the Coronation after spending a day canvassing with our candidates in County Antrim.

Yesterday I canvassed in all the Belfast constituencies after starting the day in Lurgan.

People are excited by the Coronation and looking forward to a weekend of festivities, but they are also very much engaged in the election and the need to win our council chambers for the Union.

Our Five Promises encapsulate the priorities in homes up and down the country. They want Councils to focus on what matters and get real value for ratepayers and they want the DUP to be able to finish the job of restoring NI’s place in the UK and then get Stormont working again on firm and stable foundations, with cross community consensus restored.

As the Council election results filter through from Great Britain, some have started talking about hung parliaments. I give this serious caution to all unionists in Northern Ireland. The General Election is likely some way off and lots can change between now and then.

Unionists have limited control over the outcome in GB but we can work together and stem our splits and divisions so we elect more unionist MPs. More seats means more influence for Northern Ireland in the House of Commons regardless of the size of the Labour Party or the Conservative Party.

On May 18th unionists here have a clear choice. They can back the Democratic Unionist Party candidates and strengthen our position as we seek to finish the job of restoring Northern Ireland’s place in the United Kingdom following the harm done by the imposition of the Protocol or unionism can divide and splinter, costing seats and influence in our councils and helping to hand seats and influence to those who would further weaken the Union.

Now is not the time for more division.

At this election we must urge every friend and family member to vote to strengthen our hand and ensure Unionism speaks with a strong and united voice.

Best wishes,

Sir Jeffrey Donaldson MP
DUP Leader
