Democrats,
In an unprecedented move, the Montana Republican-led State Legislature has voted to BAN Rep. Zooey Zephyr for the remainder of the legislative session after she spoke out against a bill that would ban gender-affirming care for minors across the state.
This is undemocratic, it’s wrong, and is a shameful attack on the rights of Montanans. Targeting and silencing the first openly transgender woman legislator in Montana is beneath the office of any state’s legislators. Rep. Zephyr represents 11,000 Montanans, and she deserves to speak on critical legislation that impacts her constituents – just like every other elected official.
This is not the first time Republican State Legislators have used their majorities to silence dissent. We saw it in Tennessee, we saw it yesterday in Montana, and we’ve seen GOP opposition to gender-affirming care legislation right here in New Mexico.
GOP State Legislators across the country are silencing dissent because they are proposing unpopular bills that attack the LGBTQ+ community, attack a woman’s fundamental right to make her own health care decisions, and attack democracy. And that’s why we need to hold the GOP accountable by defeating them in 2024. If Democrats can win just TWO more legislative seats in 2024 in Montana, Republicans won’t have the numbers to pull a stunt like this again.

Montana House Republicans can continue to silence Rep. Zephyr and the 11,000 Montanans she represents, but they will not be able to bury this story or escape the consequences of using their power so irresponsibly and undemocratically.
Here in New Mexico, Democratic legislators were able to turn the Reproductive and Gender Affirming Care Act into law this past legislative session. Now help us fight for progress elsewhere. Stand with us to ensure that they pay for their actions. We must defeat them in 2024 and elect Democrats UP and DOWN the ballot in Montana and across the country.
