Friends —

I got my first job serving the people of Massachusetts 40 years ago, when I was first elected to the state house. (But really, my first job where I served the people was when I was serving up frozen treats from my ice cream truck! Yes, that’s really me.)

From the state house I went on to be elected to the US House of Representatives, and finally to the US Senate. And over these past forty years, I’ve made it my mission to hold fast to my values and deliver real, progressive change for the people I represent.

A year after losing my mother to Alzheimer’s, I founded the Congressional Alzheimer’s Task Force and authored the National Alzheimer’s Project Act.

When those on both sides of the aisle denied the newfound evidence of a changing climate, I stood up for our future and called for a green revolution, and continued on to lead the introduction of the Green New Deal years later.

Since the 2008 financial crash that wrecked our economy, I've helped secure millions in funding for new jobs and economic opportunities in Massachusetts, while using my committee positions to hold the big banks accountable for the pain they brought to working families.

When LGBTQ+ rights were still opposed by a majority, I voted against the homophobic Defense of Marriage Act and opposed ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.’ I was an original co-sponsor of the Equality Act, and just a few weeks ago I introduced the Transgender Bill of Rights in the Senate.

When natural gas explosions devastated the Merrimack Valley in 2018, I brought a Congressional field hearing to Lawrence to hold Columbia Gas executives accountable, and passed legislation to strengthen pipeline safety by closing regulatory loopholes.

And over these forty years, for each of these big wins and challenging times, I was never alone . I had the power of a progressive movement on my side, pushing the cause of justice forward and making progress possible. Now, I’m calling on that movement to help me again today.

We are coming up on our April fundraising deadline in just a few days, and right now it looks like we’ll come up short. There’s still time to turn that around if just a few people step up and make a contribution. So please:

Help me continue to serve the people and fight for our progressive values in the Senate by making a contribution. Do it before our April deadline comes to a close. I can’t do this alone. [[link removed]]

I’m proud of my track record and my forty years of service, but there’s still work to be done. Let’s crush this April fundraising deadline and show that we’re ready to do so much more to deliver progressive change.

In solidarity,

Ed Markey
