House Republicans recently passed a bill they claimed was about "freedom" in public schools. In reality, their legislation would just open the door for books to be banned, for critical resources to be cut, for teachers to be attacked simply for teaching the real history of our country, and for students' privacy to be violated.
I voted against this extreme bill. But after Virginia Republicans turned education into a wedge issue in 2021 to electoral success, you can be sure that I'll be facing a lot of attacks for my position. I'm going to need resources early on to counter the lies that will be thrown our way.

As the mother of two kids in public school, it's been infuriating these last couple of years to watch Republicans try to turn the classroom into a battleground for their extreme culture wars.
I believe that hard-working teachers should not be demonized. I believe that we should be more worried about gun violence in our schools than history books that Fox News have deemed "controversial." If the GOP wants to have a debate on which party is more focused on improving public education, then bring it on.
But I'm not taking anything for granted. The GOP will try the same playbook that helped them flip the Governor's mansion and the House of Delegates just 17 months ago.
We need the funds now to flip the script. And that means hitting all of our key fundraising goals this spring.
