Part of our work to create a government that better represents all of us means partnering with journalists to tell powerful stories about the corrosive influence of money in politics and the impacts on American lives. Recently, MapLight provided custom research for The Intercept for its vivid and detailed investigation ([link removed]) about the influence of the chemical industry over our government and cancer rates in the United States.

Our team dug into the data to find that major chemical producers have spent nearly $1.5 billion combined on federal lobbying and campaign contributions over the last 12 years.

In the story, journalist Sharon Lerner of The Intercept goes on to outline the systematic rollback of regulations against toxic chemicals under the Trump administration, explaining how the changes “may leave Americans at greater risk of all kinds of health effects, including fertility issues, birth defects, and neurodevelopmental problems — all of which have been linked to chemical exposure.
