Here’s what I’m working on in Albany to promote a cleaner and greener New York this session!

Dear Friend,

Happy Earth Day!

As we celebrate our planet today, it’s essential to fully acknowledge the current state of the environment and take immediate action to repair and strengthen our climate.

This session, I’m proud to be sponsoring several climate-centric bills that aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, promote equity within clean energy, and educate our youth on the impacts of climate change. I would like to share with you some details on these bills and why they are crucial to the health and well-being of our environment and communities.

Firstly, I have introduced a bill that would completely shift the paradigm of measuring the effectiveness of transit infrastructure projects—not by how they impact the driving experience, but by how they reduce the total number of miles people drive. Intending to reduce the annual total of vehicle miles traveled within New York by 15% by 2050, this bill will drastically reduce greenhouse gas emissions from vehicle usage and save funds that can be used for future sustainable transportation and infrastructure projects.

Next, I am sponsoring an act that would establish a required climate change curriculum for science, social studies, history, and health classes in New York public elementary and secondary schools. The threat of climate change continues to grow, and young people will likely endure the worst of climate change as time passes. We must prepare our future leaders with the information necessary to address climate change before it’s too late.

Finally, I have introduced a bill to ensure that disadvantaged communities are included in the transition to a clean energy future. This bill would require a public engagement process to guarantee that at least 35% of the benefits of spending on clean energy andi energy efficiency programs go to those communities most impacted by environmental injustices. It’s not enough to protect the environment— we must protect those in our community who are most vulnerable to the effects of climate change. As we move ahead with new energies and infrastructure, we must ensure everyone has equitable access.

In 2019, I was proud to co-sponsor the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act, one of the most ambitious and comprehensive environmental stewardship bills in the nation.

In addition to my own bills that I mentioned above, I strongly support and co-sponsor other climate legislation that my colleagues have introduced, including:

  • NYS Build Public Renewables Act
  • Climate and Community Protection Fund
  • Climate Accountability Act
  • Climate Change Superfund Act
  • All Electric Building Act
  • NY HEAT Act
  • Birds & Bees Protection Act

I’m proud to support these bills and hope you will show your support as I continue fighting in Albany to get them passed. We all have a role to play in protecting our environment and ensuring a sustainable future for everyone. Let’s celebrate Earth Day together by taking action toward a cleaner and greener New York!

Best,

Andrew
