Notes from Mike's Desk from the Week of April 17 – 21, 2023

Hello, friends! Thank you for subscribing to my weekly newsletter highlighting what’s happening on Capitol Hill and in Louisiana’s 4th Congressional District. I’m always grateful when you recommend this resource to others.

IN THE HOUSE

On Monday, our House Judiciary Committee conducted a widely-covered field hearing in New York City. The Americans who testified there are real people who shared their tragic stories about how Democrats’ soft-on-crime policies have dramatically changed their lives and ruined their once great city.

These radical, Soros-funded DAs must be held accountable for the violent crime crisis they have created, and the House Judiciary Committee will do we all we possibly can to highlight and stop their dangerous agenda.

Also this week, our Judiciary Committee marked up and passed out of committee the most comprehensive immigration reform bill in decades. A major portion of the bill includes my legislation – the Asylum Reform and Border Protection Act – which strengthens the asylum process, pushes back against abuses in the system, and ensures that asylum remains a viable, accessible pathway for those fleeing persecution.

HIGHLIGHT OF THE WEEK

As part of our Commitment to America, House Republicans are not only demanding transparency regarding COVID-19 and its origins, but accountability as well. We know the Wuhan Institute of Virology is far and away the most likely source of COVID-19, and multiple Congressional Committees are probing this issue. The CCP’s fear tactics will not hinder us. I joined Fox News’ America Reports on Tuesday to discuss our Congressional response.

CELEBRATING FAITH & FRIENDS

April is the 2nd annual observance of “Faith Month,” and I took time on the floor on Tuesday to set the record straight on an often-misunderstood concept: the so-called “separation of church and state.” Watch here.

It’s always great to see familiar faces in DC, and I enjoyed having Mayor Ronnie Williams and Natchitoches officials in the nation’s capital Tuesday!

CASEWORK SUCCESS STORIES

Tax day came and went this week, and for many Louisianians, processing our taxes with the IRS can be a burdensome process. This was the case for one of my constituents, who filed his taxes in March 2022, and was set to receive a large sum in return. However, it never came. After repeated unsuccessful attempts to contact the IRS, this constituent turned to my office for help. We contacted the IRS on his behalf and were able to secure his more than $41,000 tax refund. I know this problem isn’t unique and affects many Louisianians, so if you have an issue receiving your own tax refund, please reach out to my office at 318-840-0309.

LAGNIAPPE

Rick Rowe of KTBS produced a fantastic feature story about Siggie Silvie – a longtime veteran of the Natchitoches police force and sheriff’s office. His story is a great inspiration for everyone who desires to give back and invest in our local communities.
