National Volunteer Week: Thank you NVFS Volunteers!

This week (and every week) we shine a light on our volunteers whose passion for service makes our communities here in Northern Virginia stronger. Each year, nearly 2,000 volunteers lend their time, skills, life experiences, and caring hearts to support individuals and families along their path to self-sufficiency.

Karen Horowitz, Director of Community & Volunteer Engagement shared the value of volunteering with NBC4 News, "it's is a great opportunity to enrich [volunteer's] lives and the lives of others, and it absolutely makes a difference..."

Last Saturday afternoon, NVFS staff and volunteers gathered to celebrate and enjoy what has brought us together. We'd like to thank all our NVFS volunteers across our many programs. Because of you, we are positively impacting the lives of more than 30,000 of our neighbors on their journey towards well-being.

To find a volunteer opportunity that speaks to you, visit our volunteer webpage or contact one of our volunteer coordinators who can match you with an experience that makes a difference to you and our neighbors.

Escala Entrepreneur Spotlight: Fanny Carillo, Owner of Tango Empanadas & Bakery

Fanny Carillo, owner of Tango Empanadas & Bakery, longed to share some of her beloved Argentina with Northern Virginia, which is how her food business dreams were born. With the help of Escala, NVFS’ small business counseling, Fanny received the one-on-one technical assistance, business knowledge, and confidence to start her own enterprise. After registering her business in March, Fanny faced the challenge of building a website. She attended a workshop and received the help of an expert web developer through Escala, at no cost to her or her new business.

“[Escala] helped me be able to organize my ideas and put them into practice... [they] gave me more security to start my business," explained Fanny.

Fanny's dedication to her customers is apparent in her food who describe her authentic cuisine as "quite possibly the best empanadas I've ever had," "addictive", "fresh", and food that "will leave you with a smile."

Join us in congratulating Fanny and order some empanadas today or visit nvfs.org/escala to learn more about NVFS' Escala and support small businesses in our community .
