On a chilly April afternoon in 1836, a patch of coastal prairie briefly rang with cannon and musket fire. After merely 18 minutes, Texan forces led by Gen. Sam Houston defeated Gen. Santa Anna?s Mexican troops. The revolution had been won.
This Saturday, head to San Jacinto Battleground State Historic Site in La Porte for reenactments of the momentous battle. There will also be hands-on activities, food trucks, and a variety of vendors.
At Texas Historical Commission sites across the state, you can step back into history. During May 7-13, tours and hands-on activities will demonstrate how Texans of the past spent their daily lives at these places.
From ornate Victorian mansions to everyday inns, frontier forts to 20th-century leaders? homes, there?s a state historic site to fit every interest:
Historical markers can be found in each of the state?s 254 counties, telling the stories of people, organizations, events, and other factors that have shaped our communities. Applications for new markers begin at the county level. Our website has more information about how to contact your local county historical commission and how the process works. Applications are due May 15.
Each year, the Texas Historical Commission partners with cities to showcase historic properties that engage potential investors, entrepreneurs, developers, residents, and anyone else who has imagined themselves running a business, owning a building, or living downtown. This May, see what?s possible through preservation!
