“Homelessness is an inside job” according to Lemanda Del Toro.

Del Toro holds deep insights into the challenges of homelessness. In 2011, she found herself homeless in Sacramento. Her journey took her all the way to San Antonio, where she discovered Haven for Hope. There, she became an empowering success story.

Now, she has returned to Sacramento to share her story of resilience, transformation, and hope in "Beyond Homeless: Finding Hope." This award-winning documentary explores the issue of homelessness in San Francisco and offers a solution based on the Haven for Hope model which has seen success in San Antonio.

The Advocates for Self-Government is proud to announce we are partnering with the Independent Institute to screen this film in Sacramento on Wednesday, May 3rd from 6:30-8:00 PM at the Crest Theatre. The doors open at 5:30 for a community reception.

Following the film, California columnist Steven Greenhut will moderate a panel featuring:
* Lemanda Del Toro - Haven for Hope alumna
* Mary Theroux - Chairman of the Board and CEO of the Independent Institute
* Sue Frost - Sacramento County Supervisor
* Darrell Steinberg - Mayor of Sacramento

Tickets can be reserved here.

The challenge of homelessness should be of great interest and importance to anyone who believes in the principles of self-government. This award-winning documentary brings a unique mix of academic insight, human connection, and reason for hope to audiences hungry for solutions to one of our country’s most entrenched problems.

In 2020, over $1 billion was spent on homelessness by governments and private donations. Despite the massive amount of resources devoted to this issue, the homeless crisis is worse than ever. This comes from a flawed understanding of the issues that shape homelessness, and what homelessness actually is. You might be surprised to learn that homelessness is not merely the lack of a home.

** Homelessness is an inside job
------------------------------------------------------------
What did Del Toro mean by this statement? According to Del Toro, she was her own greatest challenge. The standard approach wouldn't have helped Del Toro, and it's clearly failing thousands of other homeless people. At Haven for Hope, Del Toro received the kind of support she needed to get on a path of personal self-government ([link removed]) . Del Toro was so empowered, she now helps others.

If you come to this screening, you will gain profound insight into this issue. You will discover the roots of homelessness, why many current programs fail to adequately address them, and how the Haven for Hope model presents a truly meaningful solution.

We hope to see you there!
