From 1978 to today, who we serve and how we help is always evolving to better serve our clients and our community. Every service and shelter night Doorways provides is a testament to our founders' legacy and this community's lasting commitment to safe harbor, healing, and hope. Beginning in 2004-2005, Doorways put in place our comprehensive services model, including financial counseling and dedicated children's services. Also in 2005, Doorways' launched our Court Advocacy program to assist survivors with obtaining immediate and long-term legal protections. Project PEACE (Partnering to End Abuse in the Community for Everyone), a county-wide effort to prevent, identify and respond to domestic and sexual violence, was formed in 2006 by Senator Barbara Favola. Doorways served—and continues to serve today—as a key leader and catalyst of this coordinated community response. In 2007, through the Campaign To Do More, Doorways successfully raised $7.2 million to construct a new shelter and support its family homelessness, domestic violence, and community outreach programs for three years. Replacing the aged 16-bed shelter, the new Family Home 2-story home that welcomes 6-9 families (20+ individuals) at a time. 2008 marked Doorways' 30th anniversary. "Doorways' current staff and Board of Directors are honored to continue this legacy and lead the agency into the future," wrote Linda Dunphy, who was Doorways' Executive Director at the time. "Building a stronger and more vital foundation for the next 30 years is our tribute to those community activists and supporters who kept Doorways evolving and responding to the need." Arlington's first county-wide coordinated effort to end homelessness launched in 2008 with a consortium of more than 100 stakeholders from public, private and faith-based community organizations, including Doorways.
