Everybody knows that raising the retirement age for seniors is political poison. That’s why, when Republicans talk about their plans for Social Security cuts, they go after young people. Presidential candidate Nikki Haley says she wants people currently in their 20s to put off retirement until they’re 70. Mike Pence’s plan is even more aggressive―hiking the age for anyone under 40.

Older Americans have the power to swing elections. They vote in every election, and they treasure Social Security and Medicare benefits.

A new poll shows:¹ Grandparents don’t want their grandchildren’s Social Security cut any more than they do their own. Raising the retirement age for Gen Z has just 32% support among Republicans.

Social Security Works has warned Wall Street politicians that cutting Social Security would be the end of their political careers―but their corporate paymasters keep demanding cuts, so the politicians keep trying to find a way to make it palatable.
